Job overview

Teacher of Science - biology, chemistry or physics - to start in September 2020 .

Salary: £24,373 – £40,490 depending on experience.

Do you believe in academic rigour and traditional values? Do you want to teach pupils who behave impeccably at all times? Do you want an SLT that visibly support staff?

Are you fed up of marking for hours every night?

Then you will be interested in our oversubscribed 11-16 school in the centre of Bedford.  We are recruiting a science teacher, and welcome applications from colleagues who specialise in physics, chemistry or biology.

Whilst these are uncertain times we are still looking to recruit the very best staff for the next academic year and this post represents an exciting opportunity to join a talented science department that is already the best locally.

RESPECT, HONESTY, HIGH EXPECTATIONS

At BFS our values drive everything that we do and as a result our teachers enjoy impeccable behaviour in lessons and hardworking, highly motivated pupils. Open for just 7 years, Bedford Free School is a genuinely comprehensive school that provides a knowledge-based education for pupils of all backgrounds. We teach an unashamedly academic curriculum consisting of the best that has been thought and said, and as you would expect, physics, chemistry and biology are all at the heart of this.

PARENTAL CHOICE

With waiting lists in each year group and GCSE results placing us amongst the top schools in the country, we have quickly become a very  popular school locally. Demand for places is high as parents want the combination of a BFS education and our distinctive small school feel for their children.

We’re looking for people who want to be the best. You will be excellent in the classroom and an inspiring character who is willing to lead by example, but will also contribute positively to wider school life. Most of all, you will be clear that education is a great leveller and work hard to help us achieve our goal of preparing every pupil to go to university.

THE DEPARTMENT

This is a high-performing department. You will be joining a team of subject specialists with biology, chemistry and physics covered by subject-specialists where possible. Science is housed in 3 dedicated labs and an additional classroom, all of which are equipped with interactive whiteboards and projectors. There is a science office which allows the team a quiet place to work and the opportunity to come together regularly. The teaching staff and technician are a close knit and friendly group. Each year a significant number of pupils in key stage 4 study Triple Science and all others complete the new Combined Sciences GCSE.

SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT

As a new member of staff you’ll be supported each step of the way.

NQTs benefit from a bespoke programme of CPD, a reduced teaching load and a generous starting salary.

For more experienced colleagues career development is made a priority - there will be opportunities to work on whole-school priorities and gain the experience required to progress into middle or senior leadership in due course.

Additionally, we offer financial assistance for relevant post graduate study and support for middle leaders wishing to apply to become Specialist Leaders of Education or to do an MA. We have partnerships with a number of local training providers and with Inspiration Trust in Norfolk.

There are no unwieldy and impossible marking policies, our pupils’ behaviour is impeccable, supported by same-day whole-school sanctions where necessary, and Senior Leaders have a very high profile to ensure that you are supported to develop.

If our traditional approach and values of Respect, Honesty and High Expectations match yours, then we encourage you to apply. For a confidential discussion about the position contact Esther Logan, PA to the Principal, on 07594 249851 or by email on elogan@bedfordfreeschool.co.uk to arrange an appointment.

Early applications are encouraged and we reserve the right to close the process and interview early for this post should a suitable candidate apply.

Small school, big curriculum, infinite possibilities.

We are a small school, where teachers and pupils know each other and look out for each other. BFS opened in September 2012 and is now heavily oversubscribed, reflecting our established popularity and reputation with local parents. We have now celebrated three sets of solid GCSE results that put us top in Bedford and amongst the best in the region. In the coming years we aim to become one of the top performing schools in the country and as we continue to develop, we are looking to recruit excellent teachers who share our values and beliefs. We now wish to appoint more outstanding professionals to join our team.

Our staff will:-

  • share our values of respect, honesty and high expectations
  • believe that every student, regardless of background  is capable of the highest level of behaviour and academic success
  • be expert in their subject

In return we offer well-motivated, polite and hard working pupils and the opportunity to join an exciting school as it begins its next phase of development. We believe in 'growing our own' staff and as such, there are always opportunities for further training and career progression. We have a reasonable approach to workload with our 'no marking' feedback policy, no requirement for formal lesson plans, and a large amount of professional autonomy.
