Job overview

Teacher of Science 1FTE – Biology specialism

Commencement Date: September 2019, temporary for one term, however there is a desire to offer a  permanent post to a suitable candidate.

The Governors of King Ecgbert School are seeking to appoint a 1FTE Teacher of Science with a specialism in Biology, to commence September 2019 in this outstanding, system leading school at the heart of the Mercia Learning Trust.

The Science Department

The Science department is staffed with 16 highly qualified subject specialist teachers, combining experience, energy and commitment.  This makes the science department a dynamic and exciting place to work. The department is supported by three highly qualified and experienced technicians and a curriculum LSA.

The Science department is housed in a modern suite of eleven laboratories, one curriculum base and two preparation rooms along an entire wing of the school.  Each teaching laboratory has an interactive whiteboard, and one of the laboratories is kept as a dry computer suite.

The department works closely as a team and have just completed developing courses to reflect changes to the Programme of Study at key stages 4 and 5 to serve the varied needs and aspirations of the students of the school.  Department members are expected to make a full contribution to all aspects of the work of the department and to lead in particular projects.

Each member of the department is given a varied timetable that covers the age and ability range of the school.  Department members teach all aspects of science in KS3, mainly their subject specialisms at KS4 and only their subject specialism at KS5.

We offer Combined Science and Triple Science at GCSE, with approximately 50% of the cohort opting on to each course. At sixth form level, we offer A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics plus level three BTEC in Applied Science.

We are also very keen on creating enrichment opportunities within Science; each year we run a trip to CERN in Geneva, an A level Biology field course at the North Yorkshire coast alongside other extra-curricular activities such as stream dipping with Y8 and a forensics afternoon with Y7.

Examination results at GCSE and A level are outstanding.

King Ecgbert school is part of a successful academy trust (Mercia Learning Trust); this allows opportunities to work with other successful departments and leading professionals to constantly improve staff through specific and focussed CPD.
