Job overview

We wish to recruit a teacher of Science (Biology specialist).

Background to the post

The Science Team consists of eight teaching staff, a curriculum assistant and three excellent full time specialist science technicians. Courses include A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Electronics and Physics along with Applied Science vocational courses at levels 2 and 3. In the college STEM wing we have six well equipped science laboratories, three prep rooms and a student Learning Zone, all Biology lessons take place in specialist laboratories offering teachers the opportunity to fully integrate practical and theory work. A science staff work room helps engender a strong team atmosphere and there is an excellent working relationship with the Math’s team. Science staff are encouraged to maintain their subject expertise and are supported to undertake CPD such as day and residential courses through STEM Learning.

The Science team has very positive links with local partner schools and recruitment to STEM A Level courses is strong for example there are five Biology A Level groups in year 12 that follow the AQA specification. There is much emphasis on practical skills and a successful required practical monitoring visit during 2016/17 endorsed the high quality of student practical work.

The Biology team forms part of the Worthing College STEM Academy in which teachers and technicians of STEM courses work collaboratively to enrich the student experience and progression opportunities as well as contributing to the local agenda to increase uptake and progression to STEM apprenticeships and Higher Education.

Biology students are encouraged to engage in a wealth of opportunities outside the curriculum such as Crest Awards, Olympiads, Engineering competitions, mentoring in schools as well as acting as science ambassadors at bespoke college events such as the Big Bang @ Worthing College and the annual STEMfest that we hold in conjunction with Chichester University.

Due to a vacancy that has arisen we are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic Biology teacher, with a proven track record of successful teaching, to join our Science Team and STEM Academy from September 2018. The teaching would be spread across Biology A Level and our vocational Applied Science courses at levels 2 and 3.
