Job overview

The Durham Federation is a ‘hard’ Federation of two small 11 to 16 community colleges in County Durham. The Federation enables Fyndoune Community College and Durham Community Business College to offer a broader, more engaging curriculum for students, and means staff can easily share best practice and learn from each other.

We are on a mission to regain our Ofsted outstanding grading, and as such are investing significantly in staff development and training. Our new approach to teaching and learning is already paying huge dividends and students are enjoying learning and progressing together in a supportive, caring environment, where expectations and aspirations are high (‘the new approach to teaching & learning has led to a rapid improvement in teaching’ - HMI Monitoring Report, March 2016)

We are now looking to recruit talented and ambitious teacher of Science to join us on our journey to Outstanding - you will be keen to work as part of a team, to take responsibility for driving up standards and support in moving the area forward. In return for your commitment and passion you can expect to work with colleagues who are skilled practitioners and will offer you a thriving weekly Professional Development Programme.

You will be part of a small, energetic Science Department who work, plan and celebrate success together. This is an exciting opportunity which offers you the opportunity to put into practice your ideas for improvement, along with all the support and encouragement you need to make an immediate and significant contribution to the success of our students

To apply for this post please complete an application form and write a supporting letter of no more than two sides of A4 which should include:

  • Your view of the role and significance of Science within the curriculum, and how standards can be driven up for students of all abilities.
  • How you fulfil the requirements of the person specification and meet the needs of the role.

Closing Date: 12 noon on Monday 16th May 2016
Interviews will take place on Friday 20th May 2016

For an application pack or informal discussion please contact in the first instance:

The Durham Federation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to pre-employment checks. References will be sought and successful candidates will need to undertake an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.

Durham County Council is an Equal Opportunities Employer. We want to develop a more diverse workforce and we positively welcome applications from all sections of the community. Applicants with disabilities will be invited for interview if the essential job criteria are met.

About The Durham Federation

The Durham Federation is a hard Federation of two 11-16 community colleges in County Durham.  We have one Governing Body and one Leadership Team.

Fyndoune Community College is a Humanities College with the Rural Dimension.  Durham Community Business College is a Business Technology and Enterprise College.

Our strength is in our capacity to deliver a very broad curriculum entitlement using both colleges’ specialist facilities.  We do this however in two very calm, caring and small local community colleges.  We have developed a national reputation for the quality of our education for sustainable development.

Durham Community Business College has for two years running been one of the Schools & Academy Trust ‘most improved schools’ in the country.  In Fyndoune we have worked very hard over the last three years to bring about robust school improvement.  2009 will see both colleges achieve record results.

Student Voice is a real strength in both colleges.  Feedback from students is very positive.  Relationships with parents and carers are very effective.  We are small which enables us to know all of our students well.   All this has enabled us to create a caring, but demanding, learning environment.  We challenge our students not only to achieve, but to achieve beyond their dreams.

If you would like to see for yourself, please do not hesitate to make an appointment and come and visit us or telephone and talk with us – we would be delighted to tell you more about our college.
