Job overview

Teacher of Science – Fixed Term Contract until 17/10/20

REF NO: EDN11977

Portobello High School is currently the largest local authority run school in Edinburgh with a roll of more than 1400, drawn mainly from five associate primary schools. In October 2016 the school moved into a superb new building on Milton Road close to rail, bus and road links. This post represents a great opportunity for the right person to join a large staff team and work in a truly comprehensive setting.

Significant investment has been made in digital technology to support effective learning and most learners have their own iPad. This is enhanced by 80’’ teaching screens connected to Apple TV in all classrooms. A number of innovative approaches have been adopted to help our young people develop the skills and attributes required to make successful post school transitions. Positive relationships are at the heart of our approach, underpinned by our Achieving Together strategy. The school has well-established links with its community and the proximity of Edinburgh College, four Universities and all that the Scotland’s capital city has to offer gives scope for the development of further partnerships.

The position has arisen due to a maternity cover for a science teacher. The timetable for this position consists of teaching S1 and S2 integrated science classes.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Ruth McKay, Headteacher on 0131 669 2324.

Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by the City of Edinburgh Council.

It is a community state school, one of the largest in Scotland. Larger than the average size for a school of its type, the school website identifies a school roll of over 1,300 secondary and sixth form students between the ages of 12-18 studying at the school.

The new school opened in September 2016 to replace the original 1960s building.

Values and Vision

Portobello High School is a place with a strong tradition of educating students to a high standard, always aiming to be a school with the highest levels of care and inclusivity. There is a healthy relationship between students and staff, which has been one of the most highly praised areas of the school alongside its good quality of pastoral care and the commitment of the entire school community to enterprise and eco-school activities. The broad and balanced curriculum provides the students with a wide range of activities to prepare them for higher education and later life.

Education Scotland

“The overall quality of teaching was good. In most departments teachers used an appropriate range of approaches to develop pupils’ learning. They shared and explained the content and, in most cases, the purpose of lessons. Most teachers engaged pupils in a range of varied and motivating activities. In these classes pupils were encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own learning and teachers used skilful questioning to check their understanding.”
