Job overview

“Pupils value their school and are very loyal towards it”

“The quality of teaching is good. Pupils take a pride in their work.”

“This is a good school”

Ofsted 2019

This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic school where all can thrive and staff are highly valued.

Pittville School is a good 11-16 school situated in a superb setting in the heart of Cheltenham. The school is heavily oversubscribed at Key Stage 3 and the school has seen its first preferences for places rise year on year. We are particularly proud that visitors to our school always comment on the excellent behaviour and attitude to learning exhibited by our students. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a developing department and be part of our school improvement journey.

The science department is housed in six laboratories and is taught by five full time staff, two part-time staff and two members of the senior leadership team. The department is supported by two highly effective technicians. The department is led by a curriculum leader and two second in departments with responsibilities for key stage three and key stage four.

At Key stage 4, students study the AQA combined science (trilogy) course. Students are taught by three specialist teachers, covering biology, chemistry and physics. Teachers usually teach their specialism at key stage 4, but there is flexibility for teachers to teach more than one subject area if they wish. At Key stage 3, students study a bespoke curriculum, inspired by the national curriculum covering the big ideas in science. The ability to teach biology at key stage 4 is desirable but not essential.

The successful candidate will be joining a highly supportive and collaborative department, which has high expectations of the students they teach. This is a great opportunity to gain both experience and demonstrate impact as the department implement new strategies to ensure that outcomes for students accelerate and rise year-on-year. An ability to work well in a team and a love for teaching is essential.

Pittville School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers, social media checks and the Disclosure and Barring Service. All offers of appointment are subject to satisfactory references and DBS clearance. It is an offence to apply for the role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity with children.

Pittville School is a vibrant, forward-looking and rapidly improving Foundation school in Cheltenham.  It is our belief that every young person has gifts, talents and abilities and it is our aim to recognise and unlock each child’s potential and therefore maximise their life chances.  Our priority is to work in partnership with parents and students to help them achieve the very best possible success.  We firmly believe that each student should be challenged intellectually, creatively, personally and socially in preparation for their future life.

We recognise that good relationships are at the heart of the best education.  To support high quality learning we ensure that the school has a well organised, happy, calm and disciplined environment.  We uphold the traditional values of discipline, courtesy, good manners and respect.  At Pittville School high standard of behaviour and appearance are expected both in and out of the classroom.  We do not tolerate anything or anyone that prevents learning from taking place or brings the school into disrepute.

Pittville is a smaller than average school with approximately 900 students.  We are a true comprehensive school and celebrate our diversity.  We are proud of our calm, friendly atmosphere.  Because of our size we are able to offer a level of personalised learning and pastoral support that is just not possible in some larger schools.

We look forward to welcoming you to ‘Team Pittville’ where every child really does matter.
