Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a talented, committed and inspirational teacher of Science from September 2016. We are a small school and pride ourselves in knowing our students really well. We work closely together as a team and have individual student achievement at the heart of everything we do.

Maindenhill is a rapidly improving 11-16 school, located just 4 miles from the M5 motorway. We are committed to the safeguarding of children and expect all staff to share this commitment. This is an outstanding opportunity for a science teacher. Working in a small school provides excellent experience for someone who wants to broaden their skills as you can, and will be, fully involved in all aspects of our school’s life. You will be joining a small, committed team of Science teachers. The post holder will be expected to teach double and / or triple science to A*/ Grade 9 GCSE level and we are able to consider a science teacher with any specialism.

The successful applicant will

  • Be an exceptional science teacher, able to teach to GCSE grade A*
  • Have the ability, skills and confidence to teach all science subjects to GCSE level
  • Have a passion for science and enthusiasm for teaching and learning
  • Have student achievement at the heart of everything they do
  • Be committed to the all-round development of the student
  • Enjoy teaching students of all abilities, stretching and challenging all students to achieve their personal best
  • Employ a range of teaching strategies appropriate to the age, ability and level of students
  • Be able to create an attractive and stimulating learning environment
  • Have the drive and ability to raise the profile of the subject within and outside the school

This post would suit either a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) or an experienced colleague. We have a ‘New Staff Induction Programme’ for all members of staff that join our school. NQTs will have a reduced timetable in their first year and will participate in a fully supported NQT induction programme led by the Deputy Head Teacher and subject mentors.

If having read the information ‘Science at Maidenhill’, the job description and the person specification, you are interested in applying for the position, please complete the application form and submit it with a covering letter by noon on Thursday 25th February. We plan to interview on Wednesday 2nd March. If you would like to visit the school in advance, please contact Mrs Alison Hammonds, Business Manager, on ahammonds@maidenhill.gloucs.sch.uk.

Maidenhill School is a mixed, foundation secondary school for children aged 11-16 in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. It is a small school with around 555 pupils on roll.

Maidenhill School opened in 1957. In 2012 it began a £3.8m refurbishment programme, which brought about a major transformation both inside and outside. The old 1950s classrooms were revamped, a new Learning Resource Centre added and attractive spaces for students to socialise provided.

Today’s school also boasts a modern sports hall, fitness and dance suites and a performing arts studio.

Tutor groups are mixed age, a system designed to promote a caring environment where younger and older students help and support each other. Students spend 20 minutes per day with their tutor and tutor group on a range of activities, including literacy and numeracy activities. Mentoring is a key tutor group activity which aims to support and challenge all students.
