Job overview

United Learning

The John Roan School is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, well-qualified teacher of Science, specialising in Physics or Chemistry to join our growing Science department. The candidate will work closely with the Deputy Director of Science and other science teachers to deliver a curriculum built on ‘bringing out the best in everyone’.

About You

In particular, candidates should:

  • Show the ability to be a/or become an excellent classroom practitioner
  • Have high expectations of students in terms of learning, achievement and behaviour
  • Have enthusiasm for developing innovative and creative approaches to learning, teaching and student participation
  • Have a sound subject knowledge which they can utilise to challenge all pupils
  • Have a clear understanding of the latest curriculum and pedagogical developments in Science
  • Have an ability to engage and motivate pupils
  • Have a commitment to support our enrichment programme by facilitating co-curricular clubs.
  • The position provides a genuinely exciting opportunity to work in a rapidly improving department and to be part of the              success story of moving a school out of serious weakness.

What we offer:

  • Huge support and progression opportunities.
  • A competitive salary.
  • Disruption-free learning and a fair but strict behaviour system.
  • Collaborative planning with centralized, shared units of work and resources.
  • Excellent Science curriculum and resources produced by UL Science subject leaders.
  • Opportunity to teach up to A Level.
  • A feedback policy focused on whole class feedback – no onerous marking policies.
  • No formal graded lesson observations – just ongoing ‘no-stakes’ feedback, helping you to continuously develop.
  • Excellent ongoing CPD, career development and promotion opportunities across the United Learning Cluster.
  • Opportunity to complete the NPQSL.
  • An unrivalled professional progression model.
  • A very pleasant location in Blackheath.
