Job overview

At Mascalls Academy, we pride ourselves on high academic achievement, personal qualities are valued highly and where the atmosphere is friendly and purposeful. We are on the move from Good to Outstanding and we are looking for forward-thinking, emotionally-intelligent and innovative teachers to join a supportive team that is committed to improving the life chances of young people. As a Teacher of Science and member of the wider faculty, you would be responsible for delivering outstanding lessons and contributing to the wider education agenda; inspiring learners and raising standards.

Team spirit within our Science Department is central to how we support our pupils and each other, and together this year we have celebrated many successes. We have the added advantage that we have a dedicated Director of Improvement for this subject specialism who, formerly Head of Science at Mascalls Academy, understands our strengths and uses her wealth of experience to ensure the continued success of the Department.

Please see the Job Description which is in line with the National Teaching Standards.

Mascalls Academy is a secondary school at the heart of the community and our small school model ensures that each and every student gets the personal support and challenge they need to reach their full potential. The Academy is divided into four Colleges: Shackleton, Earhart, Luther King and Marie Curie Sixth Form College - each has their own personality and range of specialisms, allowing them to be unique.

The Academy is a dynamic and exciting place to work and the fantastic Leadership Team are committed to making it a great place to work for staff at all stages in their careers.  Our building and facilities are a mix of designs with two new buildings being modern, light and airy giving the academy a unique and special character.

We can offer you the chance to be part of a strong and collaborative department not only within Mascalls Academy, but within the wider Trust as well.  Full support will be provided and you'll have the tools and environment needed to teach in a way that works for you.  We know that being a teacher can be both challenging and rewarding in equal measures and that you thrive on inspiring young adults and stimulating their curiosity.  At Mascalls Academy we aim to give our teachers the freedom to innovate and inspire our students as we know this is a crucial ingredient to driving great learning outcomes.

To be successful you need to be a qualified teacher who is passionate and knowledgeable about your subject, possesses the ability to teach consistently at an outstanding level and lead a team. Whether you are at the start of your career or an expert teacher we focus on what attributes you will bring to the academy and most importantly what impact you will have on our students.

As a Trust we feel it is important to appoint for the right attitude which is why we look for teachers that are enthusiastic, focused, resilient and emotionally intelligent.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust you will have the opportunity to collaborate with your peers and share best practice at Academy level and across the whole Trust.  This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together.  You will also be expected to undertake regular self-development to continue your professional development and hopefully progress further within the organisation. As part of the 'cluster' structure, all of our academies are grouped together in key geographical area to enable them to be able to support each other and share resources.  It also offers staff access to career opportunities across the Trust allowing them to progress their career without switching employers.  For more information on working for the Trust please visit our careers pages.

As a Trust, we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals we all bring something unique to the role regardless of age, gender, race, beliefs or disabilities which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise.

Closing Date: 31st October 2016

The academy is committed to safeguarding children and successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.  Our commitment to safeguarding is underpinned by robust processes and checks which are in place across the Trust.

Our judgement that we are a ‘Good’ school with ‘Outstanding’ leadership and behaviour is accurate. It is our vision to become ‘Outstanding’ in every category.

Values

“Our values decide our character; our character decides our value.” James Kerr.

Personal discipline

  • Respect – for self and others
  • Determination – to succeed
  • Resilience – a commitment to personal development in spite of setbacks

Personal discipline is not expecting somebody else to do your job for you.  It teaches you not to expect things handed to you and even sometimes, in order to succeed, to do things now when you really ‘want to do it tomorrow’.

At Mascalls personal discipline underpins our character, we value respect, determination and resilience and understand that the combination of those characteristics, applied daily make success a repeatable experience.

Vision

Personal development

  • High expectations – of self and of others
  • Continual improvement – steps to success
  • Celebrate success – big or small

We are all caretakers of our legacy, as students continue their journey with us they are encouraged to build on the successes of our past and aspire to new standards for our future.   Students and staff, as leaders, drive and insist on an environment which promotes the behaviours needed for success at school and beyond.   At Mascalls we create a culture for personal development – through high expectations, a commitment to continual improvement and through celebrating our many successes. We celebrate our achievements and learn from our mistakes knowing that our collective character drives culture, our reputation and turns it into something we can be proud of.
