Job overview

The school is looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic individual as a teacher of Science. Given the existing mix of staff in the department, a strong Chemistry or Biology background is desirable in the successful applicant.  The Science department is one that has a clear vision for its development and has seen very strong outcomes for its students.

The Science Department consists of seven full-time teachers, a dedicated Science Teaching Assistant and two lab technicians.  The department is on two levels of the building with three labs on each floor and a prep room and technician for each location.  There is a new lab being added to the Science facilities this summer through the repurposing and refurbishment of another room.

At KS4 there are seven classes in each year group, sitting AQA examinations.  One group studies separate Sciences, the other groups sit the Trilogy Science.  From September the separate Science is being studied as an option and receives an additional 2.5 hours per week in addition to the time that trilogy students receive.  At KS3 groups are mixed ability and there is a wide range of ability within each class.

The Science Department offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as Science Club for KS3 and various visits which enhance the curriculum which the successful candidate will be expected to participate in.  Members of the Science Department regularly lead trips that include a trip to Iceland, a Skiing Trip to the US, the CERN Centre, as well as more traditional trips like the Big Bang or visits to the Science Museum in London.  The Department also engage in a range of competitions such as the Science Olympiad and the Lego Creator Competition.

As you can see, this is a strong, dynamic department to work in.  We are looking to recruit the best teacher possible to this role whether they are an NQT or an experienced teacher looking for the opportunity to work in an outstanding department in an outstanding school.

The closing date is 9.00am on Monday 17th May, 2021.

Please note that the school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  This post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure.

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.
