  • Dr S Horgan (Head of Chemistry)
  • Mr M Watt (Head of Physics)

The Science department at QEHS is a large, friendly, supportive and forward looking department. We have staff with a wealth of experience as well as staff early in their career so there is always someone with whom you can share problems and develop new ideas. We are fortunate in being a very well-resourced faculty with practical work being supported by team of four science technicians and a senior science technician. The Science faculty runs a very popular STEM Soc. in which students work towards their CREST awards, go on trips and take part in weekly activities. In addition there are also lots of exciting opportunities to get involved in wider school training to enable you to develop and grow your career.

In Year 7 we aim to have all science teaching delivered by one member of staff per group; after this we teach each science discipline discretely. In Years 9 to 11 students follow the AQA GCSE suite of GCSEs with most following the triple award route. Science is a popular choice at A Level and there are thriving groups in Biology, Chemistry and Physics meaning there will be ample opportunity for the successful candidate to experience and develop their A Level teaching.

Teaching of A level groups is always shared between two members of staff and our GCSE groups are shared between three teachers. Whilst it is not essential, it would be advantageous if the successful candidate could also deliver A Level Chemistry and GCSE Physics, or the Physics component of the Trilogy course up to GCSE. Each department has a comprehensive scheme of work and supporting resources which have been written in house to ensure challenge and support for all year groups.

Students achieved excellent results in science in 2018 and we pride ourselves on having high expectations and standards. An enthusiastic and committed teacher will enjoy the thrill and buzz of working with our excellent students and dedicated team.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be a Form Tutor.

First established in 1589, Queen Elizabeth’s High School is a grammar school located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The school has existed in its current guise as a co-educational grammar school since 1983, when the two single-sex schools merged into a single institution. A state grammar school, Queen Elizabeth’s is academically selective in its admissions but charges no fees for tuition. With around 1200 pupils on roll in a co-educational setting aged 11-18, the school is noticeably larger than most secondary schools, around 150 of these residing in the school sixth form. Queen Elizabeth’s has seen extensive modernisation and development over the years.
