Job overview

Part Time, (3 days a week) Temporary Teacher of Science to cover Maternity Leave is required from Tuesday 9th January, 2018.

Following appointment a temporary TLR2b to cover Maternity Leave will be made available for internal applications.

This is a part-time, temporary post. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Science to both KS3 and 4 across the full ability range. The faculty teaches the AQA Combined Science Trilogy specification at KS4. Our more able students take the separate Sciences with additional curriculum time built in for this. The faculty also follows the AQA KS3 Curriculum. The faculty is very successful at delivering good results at KS3 and 4 but there is always work to do especially with the more rigorous curriculum at KS4

The Science faculty consists of 10 teachers including four members of staff who hold TLR responsibilities.  The faculty is part of the Discovery Zone and shares a suite of rooms with the Maths and Design faculties. Our facilities for Science are excellent. All Faculty Leaders within the zone share an office in order to facilitate informal support and the sharing of best practice. An Assistant Principal is also based within the zone to oversee all its work and to offer support.

We are seeking a dynamic and creative teacher to help drive the faculty’s current success and to move it forward as we deliver a new curriculum at each key stage. Our new school has been designed to allow us to deliver a more creative and cross curricular KS3 curriculum.  Science is currently working with Technology and Maths on enquiry learning projects for Years 7 and 8. The school has state of the art facilities to enable us to do this.

A willingness to promote the faculty and contribute to its development is vital as is a willingness to produce a good learning environment within the classroom and college by use of displays and resources which promote the students’ work.  We expect applicants to be committed to equal opportunities, multi-cultural education and team-working.  The successful applicant will be given a tutorial role but we expect all staff to help students in their wider social and personal education.  Likewise, as a community college, we believe strongly that education is from cradle to grave and there will be plenty of ways that the successful applicant will be able to involve themselves in wider educational concerns.  Crown Hills has a strong commitment to C.P.D.  This is an excellent place in which to start or further a career in teaching.

Please read the attached job description and person specification.  If you are interested in applying, please fill in the application form available on our website: www.crownhills.com, please include e-mail addresses of all referees, and e-mail it together with a letter of application (no more than 2 sides of A4) outlining your experience relevant to this post to Jamey@crownhills.leicester.sch.uk by 9.30am on Thursday, 19th October, 2017.

Our aim has always been to make Crown Hills Community College one of the best schools to attend as a child and to work in as a member of staff.

The last few years have been amazing for our college community, as we have started to gain external recognition for the way we are doing things; from being shortlisted twice for the TES well-being school of the year in 2022 and 2023, to being one of five schools to win the Silver Award for the Pearson's secondary school of the year.

Every decision that we take is done with a lot of thought and consideration and we put well-being at the centre, so that teachers can teach and students can learn.

Therefore, we are not a college that is driven by OFSTED and whether we are GOOD or OUTSTANDING but we do things because they are at the very essence of helping our children and school community to be the best that they can be.

We have nearly 200 staff and 1500 students. Our mission is simple, we want every student to be the best that they can be, thrive in the best possible career and contribute positively to society.

We are very clear that the gender, background, colour, financial or social status of a child should have no bearing on how well they perform and staff here work extremely hard in trying to close that gap between the different groups of pupils.

We are well oversubscribed, even though we have increased our PAN from 240 to 300 pupils, we have more applicants than we have spaces. Our P8 score has also increased year on year and we have fluctuated between the top 12% and 20% of schools nationally. We are particularly proud that our PP pupils achieved a score of +0.17 in 2023.
