The Trustees are seeking to appoint a Teacher of Science for the Laidlaw Schools Trust of which Excelsior Academy is a part, with effect from September 2022.

The successful candidate will positively contribute to raising standards of attainment and achievement for all pupils at Excelsior Academy in all aspects of Academy life through providing high quality teaching and high quality support and guidance to all pupils in their care. This will be achieved through fully utilising their skills, talents, knowledge and expertise and through setting a positive example in their own professional behaviour.

Excelsior Academy is part of the Laidlaw Schools Trust, created to give children from socially and economically challenged areas the best possible education and start in life. In September 2013, we became Newcastle’s first all-through Academy educating children from age 3 to 19 years old.

Working at Excelsior will challenge you but the rewards are huge. Successful candidates will play an important role in our continuous drive for further improvement and will have the potential to work in Key Stages three, four and five.

We welcome applications from those who are relatively new to the profession and those who will newly qualify in 2022.

If you are someone who has the ability to engage and enthuse students with a love of science, coupled with the drive and commitment required to become a truly outstanding teacher, then we would like to hear from you.

The successful candidate will join a successful MAT where all Academies support each other to the benefit of our pupils and their families. Our Academies also enjoy strong support from an experienced LST central team, based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Excelsior Academy is an all-through school located in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. The school was first established in 2008, as a secondary school and sixth form (later split into three separate schools), and in 2012 it was decided that the school would merge with a local primary school, creating a new school for pupils aged 3-19. With around 1200 pupils, Excelsior Academy is larger than the average secondary school, and covers a culturally and economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in the school’s intake.

Principal

James Andriot

Values and Vision

Excelsior Academy works hard in order to ensure that the transition of pupils from primary to secondary provision is as smooth and non-disruptive as possible. As a relatively young school, it is able to make extensive use of a wide range of modern facilities and learning resources, and offer a diverse and far-reaching curriculum, with older pupils having numerous academic and vocational qualifications to choose from. Excelsior Academy also works hard to provide for pupils with special educational needs.

Ofsted

“Students are most enthusiastic about the academy and talk about being ‘privileged’ to have so many opportunities. They say that they particularly like the fact that they are respected and listened to. The percentage of students gaining five good passes at GCSE, including English and mathematics, has risen by an average of six percentage points each year since the academy opened in 2008. This was from a very low baseline.”
