The Governors would like to invite applications from excellent practitioners for the post of Teacher of Science. An enthusiastic, dynamic and inspirational teacher of science is required to join a thriving and highly successful curriculum area.

This role represents an incredibly exciting opportunity for any candidate who is eager to be a part of an organisation that seeks to secure the very highest educational standards for pupils, who has high standards, commitment, passion, and the ability to teach across the full range of age and ability, up to and including A-Level. 

The department is dynamic, supportive and successful with a long history of strong results at KS4 & 5. At KS3/4, we currently a model leading to both combined and separate Science GCSEs. At KS5, we currently teach A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics and BTEC Level 3 Applied Science.

As a flexible practitioner, you will teach across a wide ability range while maintaining high expectations for all learners. Knowledge of Science to an excellent standard at GCSE level is essential, as well as a desire to help every child fulfil their potential

St John Plessington Catholic College Voluntary Academy has been an outstanding and oversubscribed 11-18 college for more than 10 years. In 2007 and then again in 2013 was judged by OFSTED to be outstanding in every category and over this time has been awarded numerous accolades. This has included the prestigious award by The Times Educational Supplement (TES) of “Outstanding Secondary school of the year” in 2010, Investors in People Gold Award 2013, the TES award for “Numeracy and Mathematics” in 2013 and were shortlisted for the TES award for “Literacy and English” in 2013. We were shortlisted for the TES Secondary School of the Year Award in 2018.  The College has been a national support school since 2009 and has provided extensive school to school support during this time. 

The College become an Academy in 2012 and is part of Holy Family Catholic MAT comprising two other outstanding Teaching Primary Schools and one sponsored secondary school. In 2014, we became a Teaching School extending our network further, and we are a major contributor to our local area across all strands of the Teaching School remit.  Over the years we have welcomed over a 100 schools to view what we do well. In 2016, the college achieved a SSAT award for “exceptional student Key Stage 4 attainment” in recognition of being in the top 20% of schools nationally. We also achieved the SSAT award for “exceptional student key stage 4 progress” in recognition of being in the top 10% of schools nationally. We have received these awards each year since 2009. As part of the SSAT family we have contributed to the system by hosting a range of Conference Days as well as being part of Leading Edge. 

The 2018 Progress 8 Headline measure St John Plessington came in the top 18% of schools nationally with a Progress 8 score of +0.39. The progress of our disadvantaged students indicates that they are almost catching up with other pupils nationally with a Progress 8 score of +0.07. The national score for this cohort is -0.44 and for other students it is +0.13. Our boys achieve a Progress 8 score of +0.1 and our girls achieve +0.69 placing us as the top performing comprehensive school on the Wirral for both of these categories.

In 2018, we were chosen to be part of the government’s Mandarin Excellence Programme. Successfully securing a Chinese assistant via Hanban, all Y7 pupils study Mandarin along with three teachers. 

Our curriculum is inspired by the motto ‘Aspire not to have more but to be more’. It is designed to provide equality of opportunity and for all and to enable all of our pupils to have choice filled lives. In addition to the National Curriculum subjects, our pupils follow an ‘Aspire Programme of Study’ which includes oracy, a politics excellence programme and Duke of Edinburgh. We believe that the experience at St John Plessington provides our pupils with the social, cultural and intellectual capital to be the best they can be and to make a positive difference locally, nationally and internationally.
