Job overview

TEACHER OF SOCIOLOGY

King Edward VI College are currently recruiting for a permanent post. We are interested in part time teachers to fill this role which will be between 0.4 and 0.6 FTE.  This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher with enthusiasm and drive who wishes to work in a strongly academic sixth form college, which is committed to lively, student-centred teaching and a concern for meeting the needs of individual students.

Applications will be welcomed from well-qualified graduates, wishing to begin their teaching career by specialising in sixth form teaching. Newly qualified teachers are able to acquire Qualified Teacher Status at sixth form colleges and the college arranges for the necessary pre-16 teaching experience at one of our partner 11-16 schools. For experienced teachers, post-16 experience in sixth form, tertiary or general FE colleges and maintained or independent schools will be equally relevant. Although a postgraduate teaching qualification is preferred, applicants without such a qualification are also encouraged to apply. The college is fully committed to supporting all members of staff through staff development and in-service training.

There are currently 208 students (108 students in year 12 and 100 students in year 13) studying A Level sociology with the EDUQAS examination board. The subject is an expanding area of the College’s curriculum and is very popular with students. They learn through a variety of teaching and learning methods and activities. The subject area is staffed by 2 very experienced and well-qualified teachers, who are committed to establishing a positive environment that promotes high quality learning. Students enjoy sociology for a variety of reasons, including the experience of a dynamic and stimulating learning environment, an accessible and clear specification to help and guide their learning, the range of topics that they study to keep their interest levels high, and the opportunity to develop skills of critical analysis right from the start of the course. The subject area is well-resourced and teachers share ideas and resources to make sociology even better for students. The staff are passionate about the subject and ensure both classical and contemporary sociology is applied to real world events to engage the students effectively.
