Job overview

Hylands School. Where Teachers love Teaching.

We are part of TKAT, a charitable trust that is inspiring learners and changing lives across 45 schools in the South and East of England.

In all our schools, we love teaching. We love it when students "get it". When they have that penny drop moment after struggling and thinking hard. We love class discussions, we love silent contemplation and study, we also love students working together.

At Hylands we love developing our teaching. We understand that great teaching is the reason why students at Hylands are great learners. As one of 14 secondary schools in TKAT, the trust also offers excellent CPD opportunities, a wide range of support, and a number of events where you can meet and engage with colleagues from other schools.

Hylands School is looking to appoint an exceptional professional who will join a successful enthusiastic and talented MFL faculty and work with us to inspire our students.

The MFL faculty is a supportive and dedicated team that last year embarked on an exciting journey to redesign the curriculum across all Key Stages based on Dr. Gianfranco Conti’s Extensive Processing Instruction (EPI). This includes the use of SentenceBuilders.com, LanguageGym.com, extensive drilling of chunks of language, use of texts that are 95% comprehensible to build fluency as well as a systematic revisit of knowledge to produce deep and durable learning.

Hylands School students are engaged and excited about learning a foreign language. This is represented by the increased number of students opting for a language at GCSE. Knowledge or practice of the EPI method and MARSEARS by Dr. Gianfranco Conti would be advantageous to applicants, although full training can be provided.

The role will involve teaching MFL at key stages 3 4 and 5. Longer term, there are opportunities within the trust for exceptional teachers to become lead practitioners, and have the chance to challenge and support other schools.

The successful candidate will be someone who knows how to inspire students in order to challenge them to achieve outstanding progress and is someone who is prepared to go ‘above and beyond’.

With a new, dynamic senior leadership team in place, the school offers excellent working conditions and staff receive strong support for their professional development. Committed and excellent practitioners will find Hylands School a place where career development is taken very seriously. You will also have the chance to work and possibly live in the new and exciting city of Chelmsford, just 30 minutes by train from London Liverpool Street.

TKAT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Offers of employment will be subject to the full Safer Recruitment process, including an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

TKAT is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all suitable candidates, regardless of any protected characteristic for example race, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. All applications are treated on merit. This includes applications from individuals wishing to work full time, part-time or on a flexible basis.

Hylands School is a mixed secondary school, with a small sixth form, for pupils aged 11-18. Located in Chelmsford, Essex, it converted to an academy in 2011 and is part of the Kemnal Academies Trust.

Hylands School’s sixth form provides students with opportunities to study a range of A-levels and BTECs, and to join a vibrant community where taking on new responsibilities contributes to social and personal development.

In 2016, Hylands School was placed in the top 100 schools for sustained improvement. Rising GCSE results in 2014 and 2015 were achieved through a culture of determination and resilience among all the staff and students. The school aims to continue this trend onwards and upwards.
