Job overview

Notting Hill & Ealing High School, one of London’s leading independent girls’ day schools, has an exciting opportunity for an inspirational teacher of Spanish to contribute to a successful department in both its curricular and extra-curricular activities.

We are looking for a well-qualified graduate of Spanish with a passion for the subject and excellent subject knowledge, with good organisational and time management skills.

If you are a good communicator who can enthuse and inspire about the teaching of Spanish and the ways in which it can be further developed and encouraged, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Spanish at NHEHS

Spanish is a vibrant and popular subject and enjoys a high profile in the school.  Students study Spanish in Year 7, through a specially designed carousel of European languages, which also includes French and German, which we introduced this year. Our students have been really enjoying the opportunity to experience the language and the culture, before making an informed decision on which languages to choose as they progress up the school.  As students grow in confidence and competence, they have the opportunity to go to Cantabria, in Year 8, and to Salamanca, in Year 10.  Lessons are taught in the target language, ideas are regularly discussed, and resources shared between colleagues.  We are frequently introducing new ways to enthuse and inspire the girls, such as short stories, poetry writing and short film making. We were delighted that our Year 9 Spanish actors were runners up in the short play category at the GDST Languages Festival, which we hosted in February, with their re-imagining of 'Finding Nemo'.   Girls in the Upper School work with native speaker assistants, who are a great asset. Strong numbers continue to study Spanish at A level, when they have the opportunity to hone their linguistic skills, tackle complex grammar and discuss historical, political, economic and social issues.  Finally, there is an established and very successful Oxbridge preparation programme and a thriving extracurricular programme, involving a film club and theatre trips. For example, this term we have been to see Lorca's play 'La Casa de Bernarda Alba' and a theatrical adaption of 'Don Quijote'.

Teaching at NHEHS

“Teaching here is all about being able to have in-depth conversations with students about your subject and helping to enthuse them with the same passion as you have. Teaching at NHEHS is exactly what I imagined teaching would be like when I got my first teaching job; it’s what teaching should be!”

About Notting Hill and Ealing High School

NHEHS is a leading selective girls’ school which achieves outstanding results within an exceptionally warm and supportive community. We are one of the very first schools founded by the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST).  The school opened in 1873 and was originally located in Norland Square, Notting Hill before moving to its current site in Ealing in the 1930s.

NHEHS has always had an outstanding reputation and been at the forefront of girls’ education. Its exceptional academic standards ensure that today it remains one of the UK’s leading independent girls' day schools.

Our location in Ealing, with its excellent transport links (underground, mainline, bus and road), means that our pupils come from all over West London and beyond.

We are well known for our success in balancing academic achievement against wide and enriching extra-curricular activities and underpinning everything with excellent pastoral care which puts the individual at the heart of everything we do.  The result is girls who are academically successful, well-grounded, confident and independent. They are proud of their school and value kindness and laughter, fun and friendship. This is a place where tolerance and mutual respect are nurtured; where you can be yourself.  With a wide variety of activities and opportunities, and a strong emphasis on charitable giving, everyone can enjoy being part of a vibrant community and express their passion for learning, and for life.
