Job overview

More House School is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to join the Modern Foreign Languages Department.  We seek to appoint an enthusiastic teacher with a passion for languages, who is able to promote a high degree of motivation and achievement in all pupils.  The candidate will be able to create a high-challenge, low-threat classroom environment which allows individuals to flourish and develop their enjoyment of the subject.  The applicant needs to have the ability to teach Spanish from Year 7 to A level standard along with either French or German to GCSE level.  The post could suit an NQT or an experienced teacher alike.

The Modern Foreign Language Department is a collaborative, supportive and innovative department that aims to develop its teaching to reflect current best practice guidelines. Teachers are expected to take responsibility for their own professional development and to maintain excellent subject and pedagogical knowledge. There are three teachers in the department (two full time and one part time) who teach across all year groups in the school. The Department has access to a computer suite which is used to support other teaching methods and online language learning platforms.

In Year 7 all pupils learn French with taster sessions in German and Spanish in the summer term. Pupils begin their chosen second language in Year 8.  In Year 9 pupils have the opportunity to choose one or more languages to study at GCSE level.  At Key Stage 3 we follow the Dynamo course in French, Stimmt in German and Viva in Spanish.  At GCSE we use the Studio course for French, Stimmt for German and Viva for Spanish.  These course books offer a rich variety of tasks and excellent coverage of the 4 assessed skills at GCSE, along with the online Activelearn language platform.

Class sizes are minimized to ensure detailed support can be offered and are approximately 16 pupils per class in Years 7-9, 10 pupils per class in Years 10-11 and 3 students in each A level language group. Pupils throughout the school are encouraged to participate in national language competitions and initiatives run by the Association for Language Learning, the British Council, The Institut Français, The Goethe Institute and Instituto Cervantes.  We also actively encourage and support early entry to GCSE or A-Level in a pupil’s home language.

The department has a low turnover of staff, an open, encouraging and forward-thinking dynamic and a willingness to support each other when required.  Within a small school there is the opportunity to introduce new ideas, work across departments to provide a holistic education and to develop supportive relationships with pupils and parents.  The community feel of the school is felt by staff and pupils alike making it an excellent place to work.

This is a part-time position (0.8 FTE).

Closing date: 1800 on 4th May 2021.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Any gaps in employment will be investigated. It is also necessary for all staff to complete a self disclosure form which will notify the Co- Heads of any convictions or other factors which may be relevant to their employment in a school environment.

More House School aims to be a fair employer and is committed to equal opportunities.

All new appointments are subject to a probationary period.

Please note that applications must be made on the TES application form. CVs alone will not be accepted.

About More House School

About the School

More House is an independent Catholic day school for girls aged 11 to 18, founded in 1953 by the Canonesses of St Augustine. In 1971, the School moved to its present home in Knightsbridge, where it is now managed by a lay charitable trust.

Proud of its Catholic foundations and ethos, the School welcomes girls of all faiths, to whom it provides a first-class education in a nurturing environment proudly presented as 'a greenhouse not a hothouse'. Class sizes are small: around 16 girls.

Personal and social development, intellectual curiosity and creativity are enriched through a wide-ranging co-curricular programme that takes full advantage of the School’s central London location.

Values and vision

More House aims to achieve the highest academic performance whilst nurturing the personal development of each pupil.

With an inclusive ethos and family atmosphere, the School is committed to delivering the best possible learning environment for all pupils through a culture of excellence that permeates every classroom and department. Relationships between pupils and staff are strong.

The focus for each pupil is not simply on achieving the best grade, but on delivering the best possible educational experience and creating a lifelong passion for learning. The School’s size means it is small enough to meet the learning needs of each individual but large enough to challenge each individual and provide a wealth of opportunities – academic, sporting, musical, artistic, social and more.

The School aims to:

  • Cultivate inspiring and successful young women by fostering Commitment, Integrity and Compassion.
  • Promote an ethos of spiritual development, humility and self–awareness, founded on the Catholic faith but relevant to those who adhere to other faiths and beliefs.
  • Engender a culture of intellectual curiosity both inside and outside of the classroom and pride in individual and collective achievement.
  • Provide for the social and emotional wellbeing and development of pupils and staff through tolerance, justice and openness in an environment where all are equally valued and where individual rights and dignity are respected.
  • Embrace the philosophy of Global Citizenship by developing an awareness and understanding of whole world sensitivities and the importance of living sustainably.

More House is also committed to maintaining a high level of expertise in its staff through succession planning and staff development.
