The opportunity
This is a superb opportunity for an able and inspirational teacher to join the key Art and Design Faculty in one of the UK’s leading HMC schools. This opportunity will suit a candidate who is highly skilled and motivated and has the possibility for the adoption of i/c of subject responsibility, under the leadership of the Head of Art and Design. Performance learning and enjoyment are key and enabling pupils to explore and realise their potential and maximise their outcomes in this key creative faculty.
NULS was founded c.1602 and its academic calibre is renowned in the area. In 2022, NULS’ exceptional results of 63%% Grade 7-9 at GCSE and 84% A*-B at Advanced Level not only led in Staffordshire but built upon the standards that have acquired the school leading rankings at GCSE and A level both regionally and nationally. NULS holds the highest ratings possible under full ISI Education Quality Inspection, undertaken in March 2020. Our 30 acre campus enables the school to benefit from impressive facilities for teaching, learning and co-curricular provision across our Preparatory and Senior School sites. The school has embarked on a highly ambitious development programme, ‘NULS 2025’, to build on its academic strengths and wishes to appoint a new Teacher of Textile Design who is keen to work with similar ambition in this key curriculum area. NULS appreciates that candidates may have broader skills, in other areas of Art and Design, which will be appreciated in a faculty that delivers a broad range of disciplines including 3D, Photography, Fine Art and Textile Design and more.
The Department
The Department currently follows the AQA A-Level course in three disciplines; Fine Art and Three Dimensional Studies and Textiles Design via OCR. In addition, the department also currently delivers Photography to AS level in the Sixth Form. At GCSE Level the Department delivers AQA in Fine Art and Three Dimensional Studies and pursues the OCR course in Textiles.
The Department currently consists of three full-time and one part-time members of teaching staff and a highly able technician who is also a Qualified Teacher. The Department plays its part in the co-curricular life of the School, currently offering Life Drawing and Photography classes as well as a host of subject support sessions to ensure each pupil reaches their individual strength/potential. The department organises gallery and museum visits to support the critical studies element of pupils’ work. However, the new Head of Art and Design is keen to develop the Faculty further exploring new opportunities, and candidates with the ambition to assist with this will be welcomed. Expert input to Careers and Futures work and external links for art and design students will also be valued.
The Department enjoys a series of teaching and learning spaces in one of the school’s buildings on campus. This includes a series of large teaching rooms, some of which are open plan and interconnect, incorporating display and screen printing areas alongside access to the department’s Macs for digital design work. In addition, the department has two classroom/studio spaces for 3D and Ceramics incorporating the department’s kiln, a Textiles studio and Sixth Form study area, equipped with the department’s sewing machines and a small dark room facility for Photography.
