Hours: 1 post Full-time and 1 post Part-time (if P/T, days can be negotiated)

Start date: April 2023 or earlier if available

The Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service (HHTS) has an exciting opportunity for two Teachers of the Deaf to join our creative, supportive, and enthusiastic team of hospital schoolteachers across St George’s Hospital and Springfield Hospital. The Teachers of the Deaf will primarily work with students from Corner House ward, the highly specialist inpatient provision for Deaf children and young people, alongside our other Teachers of the Deaf and specialist HLTA’s.

A subject specialism in one or more of the core subjects would be beneficial, although Teachers of the Deaf with other skill sets and experience, including primary, are encouraged to apply.

A minimum of BSL Level 2 (or equivalent native use) is required, with higher levels of BSL being desirable. The successful candidate will receive a comprehensive training and induction package to support them in the role and further develop their professional expertise.

Corner House is a unique setting – it is the only National CAMHS Deaf Inpatient Unit for children and young people aged 5-18, who are experiencing a mental health crisis in the UK. Corner House ward has been undergoing a period of structural change with a new team of clinicians and nurses relaunching a new model from February 2023. The re-opening offers an exciting opportunity for two dynamic and ambitious teachers, who will have the opportunity to develop entirely new practices and partnerships within a wide multidisciplinary team to support the children and young people holistically throughout their admission.

We are looking for teachers who bring enthusiasm and innovation to the role and will enjoy working in a collaborative way to develop a leading service with excellent practice and high-quality outcomes for the CYP who are admitted to Corner House. They will be required to create schemes of work and deliver lessons for children and young people with complex needs, supporting subject specialist teachers to devise and adapt their lessons, and supporting young d/Deaf people in the main classroom. In addition to the role, they will work with a range of external and hospital-based professionals to build an effective support model for the students during their admission and post-discharge. They will also be part of the wider hospital and community teaching team and will work with colleagues and young people from across the service. All our teachers and HLTA’s have the opportunity to teach across the hospital sectors.
