West Island School is currently seeking to appoint a Teacher of Visual Arts to start in August 2025 on a full-time, 2-year renewable contract by mutual agreement.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Sequence, guide, and teach the exploration of art techniques and the development of ideas across all year levels.
- Actively demonstrate techniques and guide students through art-making processes, ensuring clarity and engagement.
- Continuously evolve teaching methods and units of work to reflect the changing landscape of the visual arts.
Artistic Expertise and Innovation
- Demonstrate specialist skills, experience, and a high level of knowledge in at least two areas of art-making, such as drawing, printmaking, painting, photography, digital art, textiles/fabric, or collage.
- Possess strong technical skills, including the use of a printing press, oil painting, drawing/mark making, stencilling, photography, and mixed media.
- Integrate digital software with traditional techniques to create a dynamic and evolving art curriculum, with proficiency in Adobe software to support digital art-making processes.
Student-Centered Approach and Administration
- Prioritize the needs of students by adapting to varying abilities and learning styles.
- Establish strong communication and connections with students through regular and personalized feedback sessions.
- Foster a supportive and enthusiastic environment for creativity, teaching, and learning excellence.
- Work on collaborative exhibitions, workshops, and creative projects with colleagues and students that showcase and celebrate the achievements of visual arts students.
- Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring health and safety measures are always followed.
Pastoral Care
- Serve as a tutor for a group of approximately 15 students, supporting their holistic development through pastoral work.
Extra-Curricular Contributions
- Actively participate in extra-curricular events and activities, either through personal interests or in support of student-led initiatives.
Educational Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts with PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education), or equivalent.
- Experience teaching English across the full age and ability range up to and including Year 13 (IB Higher or equivalent).
- Previous leadership experience in a school setting, demonstrating the ability to inspire and manage a team effectively.
- Proven track record as an excellent classroom teacher, with experience in global citizenship and service-oriented learning.
