Job overview

Maternity Leave MPS/UPS. To start in November 2018Darland High School is an 11-16 High School north of Wrexham and two minutes from the border with England. The population of the school has risen dramatically over the last five years and is currently oversubscribed in 3 of its five year cohorts, with a total population of 865. Estyn described this school as “a very good place to teach”. Visitors frequently comment on the friendliness and politeness of our students.

The governors of Darland High School are looking to appoint a passionate Welsh teacher and a committed team player cover for the maternity leave of one of our Welsh teachers, from early November 2018 to late June 2019. You will join a high performing team, who have experienced significant success in raising both the profile and the standards of Welsh in the school. Results at Key Stages 3 and 4 are significantly above both Family of Schools and national averages. Such is the popularity of Welsh as a subject, that it gained the highest approval rating by both students and parents in a recent 360° survey. Over 60% of last year’s Y11 achieved Full Course GCSE C+ in 2016 and nearly all achieved a GCSE C+ in the short course. The faculty have embraced fully, the forthcoming changes at GCSE and are looking forward to continuing our upward trend of improvement.

The Faculty of Languages comprises six teachers (three FT Welsh, three PT French). The Head of Faculty is a teacher of Welsh and is ably assisted by an Assistant Head of Faculty, who has responsibility for all French taught in the school. The faculty is very well organised and there is an excellent team ethos. Pupils participate enthusiastically in a range of activities such as visits to Glan llyn, Urdd club and Eisteddfod, designed to strengthen Welsh language skills and develop respect and enjoyment of Welsh culture. As well as having their own suite of classrooms, each teacher has their own laptop and iPad.

The school has a reputation for academic excellence, achieving results at both key stages, which are consistently above both local and national averages. We have close relations with the local community as well as with neighbouring schools, with whom there is a spirit of active curriculum collaboration. The school is set in extensive landscaped grounds and has benefitted from a major rebuilding programme, which saw a new science and ICT block open recently.

The deadline for applications is midday on Friday 28th September. Should you wish to visit the school before submitting an application, please contact the Headteacher’s PA, Mrs Clare Pickup on 01244 570588.

Darland High School is a hidden gem in the picturesque village of Rossett in North East Wales. We are a mixed, English-language high school serving pupils aged 11-16 in the surrounding villages of Rossett, Marford, Gresford, Holt and Llay. Set in extensive beautiful grounds the school has 850 pupils on roll.

Established in 1958, Darland High School became a comprehensive school in 1972. An extensive building programme over the years has seen the creation of the Griffin Centre, a modern two story building, housing ‘state of the art’ science laboratories and ICT suites. A new library, complete with a full ICT suite, a remodelled foyer and new cookery facilities have also been added recently.

In September 2019 we welcomed new Headteacher Joanne Lee, who has brought in many changes and the school is a 'buzz' of activity. We are at an exciting time, along with extensive refurbishment of the site our team are in the process of developing an engaging New Curriculum for a new generation of students.

Our team of over 130 staff, dedicated and hard-working, are driving towards our common goal - to offer an excellent education to the communities we serve.

We welcome tours of the school prior to application.
