Job overview

Teacher of Year 5 &6 (KS2)

St David’s College

Llandudno

North Wales

LL30 1RD

St David's College is a co-educational independent school for 250 boarding and day pupils aged 9–19.  www.stdavidscollege.co.uk

Required for September 2018, St David’s College is looking to recruit a suitably qualified, experienced, enthusiastic and committed teacher to teach a combined Year 5 and 6 class. The post is full-time and is an exciting opportunity to shape our Key Stage 2 provision. The role reports to the Assistant Head (Academic)

All teachers at St David’s College are expected to contribute to our particularly strong programme of sports, outdoor education and/or other extracurricular activities.

St David’s College was founded on Christian principles and continues to promote them today.  Many teachers live on site and the supportive residential community makes St David’s College a very special place to live, learn and work.  Opportunities often arise for teaching staff to move into the boarding community.

We have an excellent reputation for supporting pupils with dyslexia and other learning needs.  As a result approximately 50% of our student cohort receives additional support for their learning needs.  Our class sizes are small, averaging less than 10 pupils per class and advanced SEN training is provided to all teachers.  That said, we have high expectations of all of our students, the majority of whom remain at the school for 6th Form and successfully gain entrance to universities. Due to the specialism of the school, an understanding of dyslexia is ideal as is the successful completion of all or part of the Postgraduate Diploma/Masters Programme at Bangor University (or equivalent). Part funding for this course may be available for suitable applicants. Applicants should have experience teaching pupils with a range of Specific Learning Difficulties.

The school is located on a beautiful historic campus nestled between Snowdonia and the Irish Sea.

The closing date for applications is 2pm Thursday 8th March 2018.

Interviews will take place in the week beginning 12 March 2018.

Details: 01492 875974 / hmsec@stdavidscollege.co.uk

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The successful applicant will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

St David’s College is a 9-19 co-educational day and boarding school situated in North Wales which caters very well for pupils whom have struggled to learn elsewhere.

We have a huge Outdoor Education department that organises over 20 off-site trips per week (including caving, sailing, mountaineering, kayaking, etc) in addition to around a dozen major expeditions per year such as husky sledging in Sweden, diving in Egypt, sea kayaking in Greenland and Alaska, etc.  These all serve to build confidence, self esteem and leadership skills in our pupils which leads to an increased enthusiasm for school life and improved motivation and cooperation in the classroom.

Our SEN department is currently staffed by 18 specialist 1:1 teachers and we also offer Occupational Therapy and have Speech and Language specialists on site.  Academic lessons are broken down into bite size chunks, are extremely interactive and have high multi-media content.  Class sizes usually average between 5 and 10 pupils with a maximum of around 14 pupils.  In addition, all SEN pupils are offered at least 2 individual support lessons each week.   Whilst these methods clearly enhance the learning experience of the types of pupils previously described, they also attract a significant number of pupils with no challenging educational needs at all.

We deliver a standard curriculum of GCSEs and A Levels alongside a number of vocational courses.  Most of our students gain successful GCSE results and stay for the 6th Form, and the majority of our U6 leavers go on to university to study a wide range of topics including prestigious courses such as architecture, law and medicine, at equally prestigious institutions.
