Job overview

Can you help provide initial training and further development of school teachers and teaching assistants while contributing to strategic planning?

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. There are four schools on the island; one secondary and three primaries. The curriculum broadly models the English education system.

Liaising to identify and resolve gaps in skills and capacity, you must implement and develop the ITT programme for new and existing trainees and help identify forthcoming needs for new teachers. Setting up a teacher and trainee mentoring programme you will also help to embed a proposed bursary scheme and support bursary students.

You must help to ensure that priorities for up-skilling serving teachers are addressed, along with CPD needs. You should make sure all new teachers, and TAs’ changing roles receive appropriate induction, devising a rigorous system to support careful planning, with structured evaluation, application and dissemination of all overseas experience and training visits. You will undertake the Programme Leader Induction Training as required by Cambridge University to support the continued provision of the Certificate and Diploma in Teaching and Learning and Educational Leadership.

Towards contract’s end you will assess the ongoing needs for ITT and CPD, so that all ITT programmes contain a balance of theory and practice associated with a range of external professional roles with up-to-date Safeguarding operational procedures. You must educate the Assistant Director (Schools) and the Professional Tutor in the demands of UK QTS documentation, standards and practice, devising and implementing  ways to encourage more men into teaching and ITT. You must also investigate how a Teaching Centre housing professional resources could be established. Out of hours work will be inevitable.

Holding a UK teaching qualification and QTS, you will have classroom experience and as a teacher trainer, preferably across both ITT and CPD. With a background in developing school-based collaborative teacher learning, you will be fully conversant in the requirements for QTS and have the ability to deliver leadership training. Your excellent ICT skills, particularly in distance and online learning training programmes and courses should be supported by a commitment to aspirational learning for all young people and the ability to motivate and inspire trainee and serving teachers.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded by the UK Government through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • Salary: £40k pa, depending on experience and qualifications
