Job overview

Teacher

£27,289 - £42,021(dependent on previous experience and qualification

UWC Atlantic is at the heart of a powerful global movement and at the vanguard of progressive education worldwide.  We are proud to be a part of the UWC family of 18 schools and colleges worldwide – and for our courage to champion the values, ideas and aspirations in which we all believe.  We are driven by the UWC mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.  It drives everything we do.

We continue to embrace the spirit of those pioneers who not only created the College in Wales in 1962 and launched the UWC movement in 1967 but who also co-created the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, in collaboration with the International School of Geneva (Ecolint) and UN International School in New York (UNIS).

Our multicultural student body, from over 90 countries every year, comprises young people from vastly differing political, religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.  They are selected to attend UWC Atlantic based on their demonstrated promise and potential, to make a difference in the fields of sustainability, social justice and peace.  These inspirational young people are the next generation of change makers, empowered to go on to careers and lives that create impact locally, nationally and globally.

We are seeking to recruit multiple Teachers for September 2022 where the successful candidates are able to teach one or more of the following subjects:  Mathematics, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies, Global Politics, Economics, Spanish Language acquisition and English Language acquisition. The ability to teach multiple subjects is desirable.

The IB Diploma is a subject group award so all students will be taking mother tongue literature, a first foreign language, a humanities and a science subject and Mathematics. Taking a subject in the Arts is optional but all students embark on a Theory of Knowledge course in addition to their six diploma subjects.

Class sizes vary but do not contain more than twenty students. It is the practice for a Teacher to be responsible for teaching each of their classes in a linear format for the whole two-year period. You will be expected to participate in Extended Essay supervision and have an understanding of research skills.

Experience with the International Baccalaureate is an advantage but is not required or expected. What is most important is that you have the ability to teach your subjects well and with a passion. You will have a recognised teaching qualification and the ability to teach the IB DP Higher Level and IB DP Standard Level courses.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated a pattern of innovation, collaboration and engagement in learning and/or teaching and share an eagerness to work with a variety of learners and be committed to the deliberate diversity that is core to UWC Atlantic.  You will share an interest in real-world and transformative learning experiences, as well as demonstrate cultural competence and an ability to work in a collegial manner.

Key responsibilities will include preparing and implementing course objectives, lesson plans and assessments following IB and College guidelines whilst employing best practices for teaching and learning in an inclusive and welcoming environment. You will actively engage with students in order to support their growth in academic, co-curricular and social and emotional wellbeing.

You will be a passionate and enthusiastic member in the College’s Co-curricular Programme and have primary responsibility for 8-10 tutees.  You will be part of a House Tutor Team working together with two House Mentors and 4-5 other Tutors and are expected to actively participate in the life of the school.

A commitment to live on campus for 5 years along with the willingness to serve as a House Mentor in the future, for a minimum of 3 years, is an expectation. Please note that there is an additional stipend payment for the House Mentor role.

A generous international relocation package is available as part of the job offer.

Further information about this position, including details of how to apply, is available on our website: www.atlanticcollege.org/about-us/careers/current-vacancies

Closing date for receipt of applications: Wednesday 16 February 2022 at midnight

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the selection process will be held on Google Meet including the lesson observations.

ATLANTIC COLLEGE: Background

UWC Atlantic is at the heart of a powerful global movement and at the vanguard of progressive education worldwide.  We are proud to be a part of the UWC family of 18 schools and colleges worldwide – and for our courage to champion the values, ideas and aspirations in which we all believe.  We are driven by the UWC mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.  It drives everything we do.

The first of 18 United World Colleges now located across the Globe, UWC Atlantic  was inspired by educationist Kurt Hahn to engage young people from all nations in finding peaceful means to bring together a world divided by political, racial and social barriers.

UWC Atlantic was the first school in the UK (in 1971) and also one of the first colleges in the world to follow an international curriculum. It continues to lead the way in pioneering new options for the International Baccalaureate Diploma which its students study over a two year period.
