Job overview

Primary Education at Harris consists of 22 academies in and around London, some of which are the highest performing in the country, with many located in areas of disadvantage. Our central primary consultants are a highly supportive team of full-time specialists who play a key part in this achievement, and help underpin Harris as a top performing MAT for primary education. Every one of our team has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in teaching and learning and work with academies to help develop teachers to become exemplary classroom practitioners.

We are looking to appoint an inspirational primary practitioner to our growing team of Central Primary Teaching & Learning Consultants. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced middle leader who is currently leading a phase or a subject, and would like to further develop their leadership experience to impact on the quality of teaching across our primary academies. For those experienced and interested in SEN, we also offer the opportunity to support our network of SEND/Inclusion leaders.

This is an opportunity for you to fast track your career and gain expertise by working with a group of academies in London and to extend your understanding of different leadership and teaching approaches. Our consultant posts are an opportunity to prepare you for a wide variety of senior posts within Harris including future Principalship.

Job outline

The role involves coaching and mentoring, team teaching classes, modelling best practice, assisting in the recruitment and selection of outstanding teachers, and developing CPD opportunities. The post holder would have the opportunity to work with our in-house ITT subject mentoring.

Although based at the Harris Federation offices close to East Croydon Station (within 15 minutes of central London by rail and with fast access to the M25), the role will mostly be located within the academies. Our academies are all located within a maximum 90-minute commute of each other. This means we can share resources and knowledge, working together with on-call support from the Harris Federation.

As a consultant with the Harris Federation, you will receive a generous benefits package, including a Harris Allowance, performance and loyalty bonus, pension scheme (TPS), Harris wellbeing cash plan and additional Harris benefits.

What we are looking for:

  • QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree
  • At least 5 years' teaching experience, and at least two years in a management role
  • A successful track record in teaching EYFS, KS1 or KS2.

Why work for the Harris Federation?

At Harris, we have a strong culture of school improvement, and professional development is at the heart of all that we do. Via our twin teaching schools we can offer you the opportunity to gain a wide range of professional development opportunities with progression either to senior roles within our academies or progression within the Federation Consultant team.

Harris is a Federation and not a chain; each academy is different, reflecting the particular aspirations and leadership style of its Principal. All of our primary and secondary academies are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and we are recognised for transforming the life chances of the children that we educate. We look for talented individuals who want to help transform education in London, and create exceptional places of learning.

Applications will be reviewed once submitted so informal meetings, and interviews when requested, can be coordinated in line with the relevant resignation deadlines through the academic year.

Informal conversations are welcomed and visits to our academies are highly encouraged. If you would like to discuss the post in confidence please call Sabeena Hasan, Primary Director, on 020 8253 7777. For further information, please contact harry.bond@harrisfederation.org.uk

Please note: We may hold interviews as and when applications are received, and this job may be withdrawn at any point without notice. You will still be able to add information until the closing date, but you will not be able to submit your application. With this in mind, you are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.
