Job overview

Assistant Housemistress/Housemaster (Teaching)

Start date: September 2022 Salary: In line with HSO Teaching scale

Headington is a vibrant and welcoming school set in 23 acres close to Oxford city centre. In an environment where individuals come first, Headington is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, pastoral support and an impressive range of extra-curricular opportunities. As we seek to equip our girls to be future ready, we hope each individual will be able to demonstrate confidence, courage, compassion, creativity, curiosity and collaboration.

We have two exciting opportunities to join our boarding team as an Assistant Housemaster/Housemistress (Teaching). We are looking to appoint a caring, outgoing and enthusiastic individual to support the Housemistress in providing an environment which provides both academic and pastoral support to the boarders in each house, ensuring their welfare and personal development. You will join a dedicated residential team delivering high quality pastoral care for our diverse mix of boarders. Boarding is at the heart of Headington’s community and the Assistant Housemistress/Housemaster will work in a boarding house that is home from home for between thirty and fifty students.

As well as supporting the boarders within school, and deputising for the Housemistress during their time off, the Assistant Housemistress/Housemaster will represent the public face of boarding and will be actively involved in marketing boarding at Headington during open events, tours of prospective parents and other promotional activities.

Applicants will also be required to teach 0.5 of a timetable and any teaching discipline will be considered. This is a residential role and self-contained accommodation is available all year round.

It is a place where girls are given the opportunities to grow and develop their strengths and talents, whatever they may be, partnering academic excellence with superlative pastoral care and extra-curricular activities. The focus is on providing a well-rounded education, with fantastic teaching and learning complemented by exciting, inspiring and challenging opportunities outside the classroom, and ensuring girls are ready for their future, whatever it may hold.

Headington’s results regularly place it among the top schools in the country at GCSE and A Level. Girls benefit from proximity to Oxford’s two universities with a wide-ranging programme of speakers, lectures and visits involving experts and specialists from Oxford and Oxford Brookes.

Around 150 different extra-curricular activities are on offer each week, featuring academic enrichment, creative arts, sport, dance, performing arts and leadership and enrichment.

The School is rated excellent in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The School, which has over 1,000 pupils across the prep and senior schools, has a thoroughly international and culturally diverse outlook, with more than 45 different nationalities represented. Around one in four of the 800 Senior School girls board and there are opportunities for staff to become involved in the boarding life of the School alongside their day to day roles.
