Role Purpose & Description

The purpose of the Teaching Assistant is to implement agreed work programmes and intervention strategies with individual trainees and groups of trainees both in and outside the classroom and assist the teaching staff in evaluating their impact.  This will also involve assisting the teacher in planning, and the management/preparation of resources. 

Role Responsibilities 

  • To work with teachers in planning, evaluating and adjusting work programmes and intervention strategies 
  • To monitor and evaluate students’ response to these learning activities through observation and recording achievement against pre-determined learning objectives. 
  • Provide feedback to teachers and trainees.  
  • Be responsible for keeping records and updating systems as required by the teacher. 
  • Undertake marking of students’ work, recording achievement/progress.  
  • Promote positive values, attitudes to learning and good pupil behaviour in line with ELAM’s policies.
  • Liaise with parents, staff and outside agencies where necessary
  • Establish positive and productive working relationships with trainees and actively promote the inclusion of all trainees. 
  • Be aware and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, H&S, confidentiality and data protection. 
  • Report concerns to appropriate person.  
  • Attend, and participate in meetings and training activities as required.  
  • Undertake planned supervision of trainees  out of school hours, and supervise students on visits, trips and out of ELAM activities/catch-up sessions.  
  • To undertake other duties and activities within the scope of the post as directed by the line manager/Senior Leadership Team.  

Key tasks

  • To be present at staff briefing every morning 
  • Work as directed  - either one-to-one or with small groups of trainees
  • Supporting pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities throughout the day
  • Supporting pupils with English as a second language
  • Preparing the classroom for lessons, tidying up and keeping the classroom in good order
  • Assisting with preparation of teaching resources
  • Helping on school outings or at school events
  • Updating data systems, monitoring systems


Person Specification

Qualification Criteria

Right to work in UK

GCSE Maths and English (Grade C or above)

A Level or equivalent qualification (or experience).


Experience

Experience of working with young people

Experience of working within challenging communities

Awareness and understanding of best practice to ensure safeguarding and child protection.


Specific skills

Strong written and oral communication skills

Ability to keep highly organised and work efficiently and effectively even when demands of the job are high

Good IT skills

Able to establish good working relationships

An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and discretion


Personal characteristics

Genuine passion and belief in the potential of every pupil

Resilience

An enthusiasm for working with young people

Helpful, positive, calm and caring nature

Able to establish good working relationships with others

Able to follow instructions accurately but make good judgements and lead when required

Salary and how to apply

Salary: £20,500 - £24,000 FTE (Dependant on experience)

Contract Type:  Term Time only (38 weeks) . Working hours: 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. (including 30 min lunch break).  7.5 hrs a day, 37.5 working hours per week)

Actual salary:  £16,427 - 19,427

ELAM is a world-class 16-19 Academy which opened in September 2014. ELAM offers young people everything that they will need to lead successful lives within the music, games design and film and television sectors. We are based in Bromley-by-Bow, have Trainees from every borough in London and we are diverse in every way. 

Our vision is that all children in the uk should see themselves reflected in uk culture. To do this we see our role as recruiting talented young creatives who, once they succeed, would diversify and ensure the creative industries are more representative.

We believe this can be achieved by increasing the access routes into those industries for talented young people. However, unlike many other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs and therefore there is often a lack of diversity within these sectors. Increasing the access routes to everyone will therefore increase the quality of talent and the continued growth of the sector long term.

Who is involved?

ELAM has been founded by a group of leading figures from industry and education. Will Kennard, Musician and one half of production duo Chase & Status, is a founder and governor. Alongside Will, the Governing body has senior executives from across the creative industries and education. We have support from a wide-range of partners from the music, film and games industries.

We work hard, we achieve high and we produce amazing creative products.

In addition, all trainees at ELAM undertake a study of Maths and English as we know written and spoken communication, problem solving, data analysis and research are the key traits of the leaders in these fields.
