Job overview

As our Team Leader of Geography, you’ll help every pupil find the right direction.

At Kettlethorpe High School, Geography is not just another subject. Our pupils have a real passion for the discipline, with 100 to 150 enrolling for Geography GCSE every year. That is largely down to the success of our previous Team Leader, who built a high-performing department with excellent academic results – meaning you will have some substantial shoes to fill.

But it is also due to our excellent Geography facilities, including cutting-edge technology provision, plus a rich extracurricular programme that has taken our students everywhere from the Yorkshire Moors to Vesuvius. So perhaps it is hardly surprising that 84% of our pupils opt for the EBacc suite, producing the best outcomes in the Wakefield district – or that many go on to study the subject at A-level and beyond. In fact, our achievements have been recognised at a national level, and we have enjoyed accreditation from the Geographical Association.

Meanwhile, close links (and a friendly rivalry) with the History team ensure a holistic approach to teaching, and your three Geography colleagues are already high performers, so you will be building on success and taking things to the next level. As a result, we need an exceptional individual with the imagination to shape a cutting-edge curriculum for the twenty-first century, get the most from every member of the team, and ensure that Geography remains a subject of choice for our engaging and passionate pupils.

More than that, you will contribute significantly to the broader development of the school as we forge our unique path as the only non-academy institution in our area. In particular, we pride ourselves on operating as a true comprehensive, with inclusiveness at the top of our agenda, so we will look to you to engage pupils whose horizons don’t stretch beyond Yorkshire due to their circumstances.

In return, you will find this an amazing place to build your future, especially as we are just a mile and a half from the M1, meaning you can work in Wakefield but live in the one of the numerous stunning areas of rural Yorkshire.

About Kettlethorpe High School

Kettlethorpe High School is a large comprehensive school in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. We have 1,700 pupils aged 11–16 and often see year group entries of between 330 to 360 pupils.

The school opened in 1965, and we have benefitted from considerable capital building improvements over the years. Recently, the school has had a new MFL block and sports studio built and also financed our own all-weather 3G pitch for school and community use.

Pupils benefit from a rich and broad curriculum offer. At Key Stage 4, our English Baccalaureate entry and actual figures are the very best in Wakefield. In 2021, the entry was 79% with 61% achieving passes across the EBacc suite of subjects. At this school, pupils succeed and do well. Progression rates are impressive.

Across the school, the wider life of the school and extra-curricular offer is second to none. Pupils and staff engage with a rich extra-curricular offer and we are very proud of our sports, arts and performing arts offer. It adds a real richness to our school community.

Our pupils are great and have lots to say about their school. They support and represent their community well. Over the last 9 years, they have raised over £103,000 for Children in Need. Most years, they raise between £10,000 and £15,000 for CiN and other charities.

Teachers at the school work hard to support all our pupils. They are proud of their successes and involvement with the school.

As a school community, we recognise that schools are more than just Ofsted judgements. We do what we do to benefit our pupil community first and foremost. That said, we are more than a ‘good’ school and valued the comment made by one lead inspector… ‘There is something very special going on at this school.’ We agree!
