Job overview

The core business of bksb is the innovation, production, marketing and sales of Functional Skills/GCSE assessments and resources for English, mathematics and ICT. The bksb products are currently used and trusted by over 2,000 educational organisations around the UK, as well as many others overseas, to support and develop the skills of millions of learners.

The particular responsibilities for the holder will be the creation and maintenance of local and wide area networks, alongside providing technical support for bksb clients. The bksb software programmed in-house and is fully hosted online.

The post holder will have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Server and Desktop operating systems. They will possess excellent skills in developing and maintaining networks including managing servers and hardware such as routers and firewalls over local/wide area networks and cloud-based services. An understanding of databases and the Structured Query Language (SQL) will be essential. A good knowledge of Internet Information Services (IIS) would be beneficial.

In order to deliver a user-focussed service, an excellent telephone manner and customer service skills are essential. In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, have a flexible approach to working and be able to work independently and as part of a wider team.

2.1 Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintaining the hosted services (local, remote and cloud based) and ensuring that customers accessing these servers receive an excellent service in terms of speed and reliability.
  • Produce documentation and diagrams covering the network configuration and to provide support to the programming team in terms of making recommendations and offering advice on the development and deployment of software products.
  • To support the bksb team by undertaking telephone/technical support to bksb customers, to support the implementation of the products and to provide remote support to fix issues regarding the software products.
  • Use SQL to investigate and repair data integrity issues within MS SQL Server databases.
  • Use SQL to produce data reports.
  • To assist the bksb software developers in maintaining and supporting development servers and advising on software deployment and configuration.
  • To assist in the production of technical user guides for bksb products.

2.2 Other Responsibilities

  • To uphold and promote company policies and procedures, promoting those specifically applicable to this area of work, including the Equality & Diversity policies and procedures and attend training as requested.
  • To keep up to date, so far as necessary, for the efficient executing of the job, with new legislation, procedures and techniques and attend relevant mandatory training.
  • To be conversant with and participate in activities and developments at company, regional and national level which are relevant to the post.
  • To ensure professional and efficient customer service is provided at all times when answering and responding to requests for information on behalf of bksb.
  • To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required commensurate with the post.

The post-holder will be part of bksb technical development and will report directly to the Manager: Technical Development.

  • The post is offered on a bksb Ltd fixed term contract and is subject to those terms and conditions
  • The salary range for this role is £9,796 - £13,225 per annum (pro rata)
  • You will be required to work 37 ½ hours per week
  • You will be entitled to 32 days leave (plus bank holidays).

The post holder may be located at any bksb Ltd site and may be expected to travel as required. You will however be given reasonable notice of any change in your principle place of work and be fully consulted.
