Job overview

An exceptional teacher of Geography is required to join our vibrant, progressive and popular department. The successful candidate will be required to teach across Key Stage 3 and 4. A-level teaching is available for a suitably qualified candidate and the ability to teach physical geography at A-level would be a significant advantage.

This is a full-time post to cover a maternity leave and is expected to be until at least the end of the academic year.

Geography teachers who love to inspire learners by using the outdoors, real life examples and a range of learning activities are invited to apply for this opportunity to work in our outstanding school.

In 2017, the Geography department achieved outstanding examination results including 19% A* at A-level. At GCSE, well over a third of a grade was added in value to Year 11 outcomes in Geography. The subject is also currently the most popular GCSE subject in Year 9, which is the start of our three-year KS4 programme.

Geography is taught in a suite of three classrooms, all with interactive televisions and a wealth of resources to enhance teaching and learning. The department organises an extremely wide range of extra-curricular activities and fieldwork activities, including to Hilbre Island, the Lake District, Yarm/County Durham and London, as well as further afield in China, Iceland and shortly also in Malawi.

It is an exciting time to join this forward-thinking, supportive department of four colleagues, led by a dedicated Head of Department, who will offer unfailing support to both experienced colleagues and those new to the profession. We also have an informative and successful mentoring programme for NQTs at WKGS.

If you have any questions about the post, please contact Mr M J Scott, Deputy Headteacher at mscott@wkgs.net

To apply, please visit www.wkgs.org where you can download a copy of our application form.

Closing date: Monday 30th October at 2pm.

Please note the school is closed for Half Term from 23rd - 27th October.

All staff are subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Learning in the classroom is enhanced and supported by field trips, educational visits and a wide range of other opportunities. As a Comenius School we have links with partner schools in other European countries, many established foreign exchanges and visits.

Year 7 and Year 9 enjoy residential outdoor opportunities and many of our senior students appreciate and benefit from the challenges presented by participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The school is proud of its reputation for success in a wide range of competitive sports. Students are regularly selected to represent their sport at county, regional and national levels.

Pastoral care and guidance are important and Form Teachers play a key role. Heads of Year bridge and help to support the academic and personal development of the students.

The well being of the staff is equally important. Continuing Professional Development is offered to all. Staff are offered holistic therapy and use of the fitness suite as part of a well-being programme. The award of the National Healthy Schools’ Standard recognised the good work and the importance given to healthy living.

The vision for the school as a Science College is to be a centre of excellence on the Wirral and for Science and Mathematics teaching and learning. The school aims to raise overall standards from an already extremely high level in Science and Mathematics and across the whole curriculum at all Key Stages and to contribute to enhanced standards in Science and Mathematics in partner schools.

The school is a very happy one where teachers, support staff and students work well together to achieve the very best. We enjoy what we do and are proud of our achievements.
