Job overview

Harrogate Ladies’ College is looking to recruit a Temporary and Part-time Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages to join the MFL department from 1 September 2021 for one academic year.  The School is looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of languages, with the following experience:

German: German teaching experience from Year 7 to Year 13.  A Level experience required.

French: French teaching experience at Key Stage 3 and at least up to Year 9.

Spanish: Spanish language skills would also be advantageous in the department and would add to the flexibility of the teaching team.

The post presents a rare opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious, energetic and talented linguist to join a well-established independent girls’ school, with an enviable reputation and record of success in Languages.

A willingness to participate in the pastoral and extra-curricular life of the School is essential.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department

There are three full time members and one part-time member of the department as well as three Modern Foreign Language Assistants. Most teach across the full age and ability range.

The Department is housed in 5 classrooms all of which are situated in the College’s main building. Computers and printers, projectors and interactive whiteboard facilities are available within the department. The Modern Foreign Languages department office is close to the teaching rooms where textbooks, past papers and other practical equipment are stored. It also has its own computing and printing facilities.

The Curriculum

Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups throughout the key stages. Year 10 and 11 follow the Cambridge IGCSE programme, with examinations taken at the end of the Year 11. Year 12 and 13 study the AQA A level syllabus.

Results

Results in public examinations are high. Last year 60% of all GCSE grades were 7, 8 or 9 and 92% of all grades at A level were A*- C.

Extra-curricular

A variety of visits and courses abroad take place on a yearly basis. Trips to Normandy and Berlin are offered in alternate years to Upper 3 (Year 7) and Lower 4 (Year 8) in the Summer Term.  Lower 5 to Upper 6 pupils studying languages are offered trips to both Germany and Spain.

A range of other extra-curricular activities are provided by the department, including the Languages Olympiads, as well as a drop-in clinic where girls may get extra help with aspects of their languages work, including revision sessions for public examinations.
