About Reed's School

Reed’s School is a leading HMC independent day and boarding school, providing an education for around 800 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18 years, with girls joining in the Sixth Form. Although primarily day, the School benefits from all the facilities of a boarding school, which provide the warm community feel that embodies the ethos and character of the School.

Reed’s is situated in over 40 secluded acres of heath and woodland within five minutes’ drive of the M25 and 30 minutes from Heathrow, Gatwick and central London. Oxshott train station on the Guildford-Waterloo line is ten minutes’ walk. Epsom, Kingston, Leatherhead, Guildford and Woking are all within easy reach.

TEACHING

Teaching at Reed’s is based upon our principles of motivating and inspiring each pupil individually to achieve their full personal potential. Teaching and Learning was given the highest accolade by inspectors in our last ISI Inspection, and we continuously look to make improvements; supporting and developing our staff is key to this. It is a professional goal for all our teachers to make the lessons interesting and to make the learning enduring. We have developed our own unique cognitive learning model to help pupils understand how to learn. The vast majority of our pupils go on to attend their first-choice universities, with Russell Group universities being the most popular destinations. A number of pupils also go on to attend universities overseas with US universities becoming increasingly popular.

HISTORY

Reed’s School was founded by Andrew Reed in 1813 to educate destitute children who had lost both parents (or their father, with the mother unable to provide for them). In 1871 it moved from Clapton to Watford, and in 1946 to its present site in Cobham, Surrey. A boarding Foundation School until 1958, it then expanded to take fee paying boarders and, in the mid 1960’s, day boys.

ETHOS

The purposeful and nurturing ethos of the School, where there is a love of learning and where we seek to develop the self-esteem and character of each individual, is at the heart of our pupils’ successes. Inspiring them to unlock their true potential is founded on outstanding pastoral care, excellent teaching and a philosophy of providing a breadth of opportunities for all our pupils.

WORKING AT REED’S

The passionate and committed employees at Reed’s are one of our greatest assets and are key to providing the foundations described above and the warm sense of community that is prevalent within the School. Supporting and developing both teaching and support staff is extremely important. Teachers at Reed’s have the opportunity to teach highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals. Our staff are recognised for their inspirational and dynamic approach to learning.

Reed's School and Ripley Court School are committed to being a successful, caring and welcoming place for all employees. We want to create a supportive and inclusive environment where our employees can reach their full potential, without prejudice and discrimination. We are committed to a culture where respect and understanding is fostered and the diversity of people's backgrounds and circumstances will be positively valued.
