Train as a Mathematics Teacher at Dulwich College

September 2022

We are looking to recruit both career changers and recent graduates to train as mathematics teachers.

Dulwich College is the South London Hub of the National Maths & Physics SCITT, a school centred and subject specialised teacher training programme that partners the state and independent school sectors. Trainees on the programme are in school from day one and at the end of the year are awarded both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE). They undertake a main school placement at one of our partner schools (spanning the comprehensive, grammar and independent sectors) and also a second, six-week placement at a contrasting school. During both school placements, trainees teach for four days per week and spend the fifth at Dulwich College for subject and professional studies training, designed and delivered by leading practitioners. The course is highly subject specialised: trainees receive 14.5 days of mathematics specific training over the year.

Trainees are awarded a tax-free £24,000 government bursary for the training year. There are also more generous scholarships available from the Institute of Mathematics (IMA), which many of our current trainees have successfully applied for. For trainees who left education some time ago, there are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available, for which trainees receive an additional bursary for completing.

Entry requirements for candidates are British citizenship and a first- or second-class bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, in addition to a love of their subject and a desire to work with young people.

For further information and to book physical or online school experience/taster sessions (including a course introduction, discussion of life as a teacher and observation of classroom teaching), please email James Rosslyn-Smith (Subject Lead in the Mathematics Department) at rosslyn-smithjh@dulwich.org.uk  or book online at https://schoolexperience.education.gov.uk/. Further information about the National Maths & Physics SCITT can be found at https://www.nmapscitt.org.uk/ and general information about teacher training is available on the Get Into Teaching website at https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/.

Applications can be submitted at https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-teacher-training between now and June 2022. The course start date is September 2022 and there is also an option to train part time.

Dulwich College is an academically selective independent boys’ school in south east London with a tradition of inspired teaching, genuine scholarship and co- curricular breadth. We are a school committed to providing a wealth of opportunities to pupils and colleagues within a nurturing, equitable and caring ethos.

There are approximately 1,630 boys on the school roll, of whom some 130 are boarders. There is a strong history of diversity at the College, reflecting that of south east London generally, but also that we are committed to an expanding programme of means-tested access. Currently about 30% of pupils have such an award but we hope to increase this to 50% in the coming years.

Situated in 70 acres, yet only 12 minutes by train from central London, the College enjoys outstanding academic, co-curricular and sporting facilities, including The Laboratory, a RIBA National Award-winning Science and Arts building. There has also been an extensive refurbishment of its iconic Grade II* listed Barry Buildings and surrounding landscaping.

Further information about the College can be found on our website www.dulwich.org.uk.
