Job overview

We are currently recruiting for a Trainee Lecturer in GCSE and/or Functional Skills Maths with the potential to deliver outstanding student achievement and a commitment to driving forward the provision of Functional Skills Maths across all divisions in the College to ensure student success.

This post would suit newly qualified graduates who wished to gain a teaching qualification or newly qualified teachers. Trainees have reduced contact hours and are supported through a mentoring system and staff development programmes to develop their classroom practice.

As an ambitious trainee lecturer, you will work closely within the Division of Maths and English to ensure that students are actively engaged in all aspects of the delivery of Maths across the College and you will also be expected to liaise with cross-college areas to enhance the student experience and provide the widest range of opportunities to our students.

As a trainee lecturer your contact teaching hours, relevant to subject specialism, will increase as you gain in skills and experience.

With a relevant degree level qualification in Maths or a related subject, ideally you also possess a PGCE or Certificate in Education. However should you not have this, the College has an excellent Staff Development programme where a recognised teaching qualification can be gained.

You will have the knowledge of current issues in Further Education relating to the curriculum area and thought knowledge of current GCSE and/or Functional Skills Maths specifications and experience of teaching this in an FE context would be beneficial, it is not essential to the post.

Rated Outstanding in the latest Ofsted inspection, Burnley College Sixth Form Centre provides first-class Further Education, University Education, Apprenticeship, business training and adult learning programmes, in the heart of Pennine Lancashire. We are one of Burnley’s largest employers and accredited by Investors in People (IIP) for providing a ‘special environment where staff genuinely do value one another and speak passionately about the College, where expectations of all are high and where support and development opportunities are immense’.

At Burnley College, we celebrate the diversity of all our staff, students and visitors. We provide a safe and supportive environment in which everyone is able to study and work to the best of their abilities and we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all.

The College is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all learners and expects all staff to share in this commitment. Employment at the College is subject to an Enhanced DBS Check via the Disclosure and Barring Service and any post involving regulated activity will also be subject to an additional barred list check.

The iconic Burnley College campus combines a highly successful Sixth Form Centre, a Skills and Adult Centre and a University of Central Lancashire campus.  The College aims to provide students with high quality learning and resources to help them reach their full potential  and is now amongst the highest performing schools and colleges in the country.

Burnley College was judged Outstanding across all areas by the Government's school and college standards inspectors, Ofsted, in May 2009:

"Achievement and standards are outstanding."
"Innovative strategies promote and enable students' independent learning."
"In their time at College students make exceptional progress."

In addition to the Outstanding Ofsted judgement, Burnley College was named a ‘Beacon Status Institution’ in 2010 by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS). Beacon status identifies and recognises the very best providers of Further Education in the UK. Beacons are a source of expertise and agree to willingly share their expertise and good practice with other organisations.  Nationally of 1800 institutions there are 160 Beacon institutions with only eight Colleges, including Burnley College, being awarded the status this year.

Students at the College are able to study A Level and Advanced Vocational subjects through to full degrees and work based professional development qualifications. They achieve consistently high pass rates and many receive national recognition for their achievements.

Innovative technologies have been incorporated into all classrooms, laboratories and workshops. Classroom layouts have been carefully planned to facilitate the highest standard of teaching. The newly developed large, flexible open plan Science Hub contains high specification laboratory facilities, interactive whiteboards and an extensive range of science books and journals.  Independent study is promoted through Active Learning Zones (ALZs) which combine traditional learning materials such as books and journals with online learning resources. These ALZs have been recognised as best practice by Ofsted.

The campus has superior sports facilities which include a large sports centre, with a climbing wall which meets the criteria for outward bound courses and a state-of-the-art fitness suite. There is also a UEFA standard, full-sized outdoor 3G pitch and a 5-a-side multi-use pitch. There are excellent facilities for performance and exhibitions including a 160 seat Performance Theatre and 110 seat Lecture Theatre.
