Job overview

Our Initial Teacher Training programme is open for applications for the September 2023 intake. Gain your PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education) and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) whilst working in one of our schools.

AET is partnered with Ark Teacher Training, an Ofsted outstanding training provider.

Ark utilises a highly ambitious and coherently sequenced curriculum to provide the best possible teacher training.

Over the course of the year you will receive regular, high-quality training from tutors and mentors to support your development towards becoming a great teacher of your subject. School-based mentors are experienced colleagues, who are trained to use the most effective coaching techniques to support the application of trainees’ new learning into practice.

As an AET trainee you will also receive regular trust-wide learning and development which draws upon experts from across our network of 57 schools. You will be part of our national AET trainee community providing opportunities to collaborate, learn from best practice and have access to a network of support. We will support you to become brilliant educators and in time, leaders within our network - we offer unrivalled career opportunities for professional growth. Everyone who successfully completes their first year will be offered a contract within our network.

As part of the course you will:

  • Have a 5 day school orientation experience (SOE): before your course starts, spend time in your school meeting your colleagues and interacting with pupils so you can hit the ground running in September!
  • Join our mandatory summer School: all new trainees come together for two weeks in August (7th - 18th) for an introduction to the programme, our schools and the principles of great teaching. You’ll also cover the essential elements of behaviour management. The summer school sets up trainees for success, so you are fully prepared for teaching from September.
  • Have weekly coaching and learning to plan: every week you’ll be observed by your in-school coach, so they can offer you positive feedback and bite-sized improvement targets.
  • Be allocated a trained lead planner who will help you create effective lessons, developing your planning skills and giving you the opportunity to ask detailed subject -knowledge questions.
  • Attend weekly training: in-person/virtual training sessions with your tutors/peers.

The training programme itself is school-based and you will spend half a day every week in a session with your Ark tutor and other trainees from the network.

You’ll obtain experience in several schools throughout the year; you will work full time in one school, but you will have a three week placement in an alternative school and will also have the opportunity to visit other educational settings.

Eligibility:

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in the target subject you'll be teaching, though A-levels can be considered.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and Maths, (+ science for Primary teaching) or equivalent qualifications

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

AET was established in 2008 and is now a national network of 57 primary, secondary and special academies. We are proud of our diverse and inclusive network of schools which span nearly every region in the country.

This is a hugely exciting time to be joining the organisation, and as we pivot from being in turnaround mode to becoming a high performance organisation on the pathway to sustainable excellence. This will see us building our in-house education improvement capacity and expertise, making sure that our schools have all the support they need to deliver an excellent education for every child, every day.

Our people are our single greatest resource and we want to make sure we are creating the optimum environment and conditions so that everyone in AET can do their very best work. We will only deliver on our promise of excellence for all of our children if we attract, develop and retain the very best talent in the country and surround them with exceptional development throughout their careers.

We want people on our team who are excited by scale and the prospect of having a deep and lasting impact on the lives of tens of thousands of children. We also want people who are intellectually rigorous, stay curious, and generous enough to be committed to the messy challenge of collaboration.

AET has an exciting future ahead and by joining us on this journey, you will have an unparalleled opportunity to make a lasting and meaningful impact on the children and young people in our schools.
