About the role: The Halley Academy are seeking to appoint a confident and experienced Tutor of Maths to join our learning support team raising the attainment of students whose learning has been impacted by COVID-19. Our successful candidate will be helping students with additional needs in mainstream classes and ensuring that strategies are implemented to respond to the individual needs of the students. The nature of the role is to work on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, with an assessment of progress at the end. Applicants need to be able to diagnose where students' weaknesses lie, remedy and ensure that the learning is secure. Candidates need to be able to quickly develop a positive relationship with students, and be tenacious in the pursuit of progress.


Key responsibilities of this role include the following;

  • To support small groups of students designated by the class teacher or Senior Leadership Team.
  • Supporting pupils with additional needs in mainstream classes, ensuring their safety and access to learning.
  • Establishing good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
  • To assist teachers to identify the learning needs of individual students.
  • To provide feedback to teaching staff regarding student progress with respect to identified units of work.
  • To keep an accurate record of group work: learning objective / teaching task /students / relevant assessment data.
  • To plan and deliver sessions following an outlined programme of study.
  • Supporting pupils in using basic ICT as directed.


We are ideally looking for an experienced/retired teacher who is committed to improving the life chances of students affected by the pandemic. Our appointed candidate will be eligible to receive bespoke training and development opportunities to positively influence our students’ learning. 


This role is offered on a Paid on Claim basis and offers an hourly rate of £25.37. The successful candidate will join us from January 2022.

Our STEM provision develops critical thinking skills, creativity and innovation across the curriculum and we are in a privileged position to be registered to deliver the T Level programme at Key Stage 5 from 2023 in a brand new Engineering and Design Centre (due to open in January 2022). As part of our Digital Strategy, each student has their own Chromebook which is used as a tool for learning and to prepare them to participate in the ever-evolving technological world.
