Arden College is recruiting a Tutor to join our Teaching team now! We are looking for an ambitious, energetic and committed tutor who will expand the learning experiences and provide tuition for small groups of young people, which allows for full engagement and ensures that the program of learning meets the needs of the individual. You will have experience teaching in the primary, secondary, or further education sector within Special Educational Needs. The successful candidate will be teaching and supporting our young people who have autism and associated complex needs.

Arden College is specialist college providing education to students with autism aged 16 to 25. We also offer specialist residential care to some of our students on a 38- or 52-weeks basis and we seek to employ a proactive and enthusiastic individual with experience of teaching English up to level 2. You will teach small groups of learner's essential skills.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Plan engaging lessons tailored to the interests and aspirations of your students
  • Promote students’ enjoyment of learning
  • Follow and update schemes of work as necessary
  • Maintain organised, coherent academic plans
  • Work closely with classroom support staff, directing and guiding them to ensure highly effective support and challenge for our students
  • Maintain records of academic and independence achievement for each student
  • Provide evidence of students’ progress
  • Liaise with other staff members to plan and organise teaching
  • Regularly advise and consult the principal, discussing any concerns that arise and acting on any agreed decisions
  • Maintain a tidy, organised teaching area that is an inviting place in which to learn
  • Record significant incidents, accidents, behaviour and hazards

The successful candidate will have previous experience of teaching the national curriculum, as well as teaching and supporting young people within SEN schools, along with the following characteristics:

Communication – Communicating with our young people is vital to understand their needs. Good teamwork and communication plays a key part in ensuring important information is relayed to other staff.

Organisation – You will have experience of organising, planning and teaching well-structured lessons tailored to the needs of the pupils as well as monitoring each students learning needs, adapting teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of each pupil.

Attentive – No two tasks will be the same so being attentive to understand the needs of the young people we support is vital

Arden College is situated in the heart of Southport, a vibrant and cultured town on the west coast of Lancashire. The college makes the most of its position and much of the extended and college curriculum is located within the community and vocational settings within the region. The college is a co-educational residential and day specialist college for students aged 16-25 years with learning difficulties and disabilities and or behavioural and social difficulties. Individual College programmes of day or residential support are available as either 38 or 52 week placements for up to a three year period and are subject to regular reviews to ensure student needs are being met. The focus is to ensure that learners are prepared for independent adult life as much as is possible
