Shenzhen College of International Education: 

Founded in 2003, SCIE is the city’s first full-time high school (Year 10 to Year 13) teaching an international curriculum. SCIE is a highly selective day and boarding school teaching an international curriculum to Chinese students preparing them for oversea universities. Using English as the medium of instruction and communication, SCIE offers IGCSE and GCE AS and A-levels, mainly through Cambridge international. SCIE is a fully accredited member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and a member school of the regional organisations: EARCOS and FOBISIA.

The mission of the College is to educate students in a challenging and international environment that leads to academic achievements at the highest level, and to develop social responsibility, creativity, initiative and enthusiasm, which provide each student with the best preparation for future opportunities. 

Students at SCIE aspire to attend the best overseas universities. The class of 2020 received 30 Oxbridge offers in a diverse range of subjects including Philosophy, Computer Science, HSPS(Human, Social, and Political Science), Law, Psychological, Land Economy and Behavioral Science, Economics and Management and Sciences. In addition to outstanding offers from top UK&US universities and liberal arts colleges. 

SCIE has a very diversified staff who come from more than 20 countries, not only UK, New Zealand, America and Australia, but also Canada, Colombia, India, Ireland, South Africa and Spain. In 2020, the College has over 140 full-time teachers and 70 administrative staff members. 

In August 2020, the College moved to its brand new purpose-built campus in Antuoshan, Shenzhen. The new site is fully equipped for the College expansion with smart classrooms, a large number of science laboratories, a 750-seat theatre, sports facilities and all that we need to facilitate the high quality teaching and learning of the College community. The top floor, with a comfortable staff lounge, gym and designated areas for meetings and CPD, is accessible to staff only. Staff are housed in the separate adjacent staff block, which offers two and three-bedroom furnished apartments.

Antuoshan is in Futian, the CBD district of Shenzhen. The campus is within walking distance to international shops, supermarkets and restaurants. It is a stones thrown away from the Antuo Hill subway station, giving easy and convenient access to the city’s extensive metro network.

Specific Responsibilities:

The University and Careers Office (UCO) is a friendly and professional team that is committed to preparing students for life beyond SCIE. In 2020-2021, we are team of nine: a designed UCO secretary and eight counsellors, including the Head of UCO, USA Universities Coordinator, UK universities Coordinator. As the College expands, the UCO will have two additional counsellors in the following academic year.

At SCIE, at least 80% of our students apply to the UK through UCAS, and about a third of them apply to the US. Most students apply to multiple destinations, including Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. SCIE students have very high university aspirations. They work zealously to achieve impressive and deserving admissions results, including G5s, Ivy League and other highly competitive US and overseas universities. With 30 Oxbridge offers in 2020 and 23 in 2019, SCIE has consistently ranked first in China in offers from the two universities. The positive attitude, commitment and calibre of the students make them a joy to work with in the University and Careers Office.

As a University Counsellor, you will be guiding and counselling a maximum caseload of 45 A2 (Y13) students through their applications, and get involved in all the other three year groups in their university exploration and planning. The majority of your work is 1:1 university counselling with A1s and A2s, but you will also be expected to teach the G-level enrichment classes and A1 university preparation lessons.

We are looking for candidates with experience supporting students who come from highly selective education background, follow the British curriculum and aspire to attend prestigious overseas universities. The ability to facilitate university preparation sessions and understanding of the Chinese context will be added advantages. 

The regular working week is Monday – Friday, 0800 – 1630 (early finish at 1500 on Fridays). Counsellors also have six periods of timetabled personal time when presence on campus is not expected. Teaching staff, including counsellors, are also expected to offer one hour after school of extra-curricular activity each week. Our school year is from August to mid-June with all Chinese holidays (including one week of October National Day and three weeks for Chinese New Year), plus two weeks’ Christmas holiday.

Qualifications and experience required

• A university degree

• Either a teaching qualification (PGCE, BEd or equivalent), or a counselling qualification

• Two years’ university counselling experience

• Sixth Form teachers with university support experience are welcome to apply
