About Role

The University Guidance Counsellor help students find their ‘best fit’ for the future. By providing personalized service for students and their families through transitions and assisting in professional learning for teachers, and workshops for parents on the student journey, the successful candidate will be an important figure in the School community. 

They will be expected to:

•   Help students and families aspire realistically and choose their destination wisely.

•   Do all that they legitimately and honestly can to ensure each student’s college application is successful.

•   Represent the school in the best possible light and boost its profile in the higher education community. 

•   Educate students and parents about universities, academic majors & programmes, the admissions process, trends, procedures, and admission testing. 

•   Provide an individualized counselling service for students in Year 10 – Year 13 which should include advice on academic pathways.

•   Encourage admissions representatives to visit the campus and facilitating meetings between university representatives and our students. 

•   Maintain accurate and up to date records on students, including external exam results, internal Progress Report data and transcripts.

•   Write an official school recommendation or reference for each Year 13 student in the caseload. 

•   Contribute to the delivery of the careers counselling curriculum as needed to Year 10 & Year 11 cohorts.

•   Assist in coordinating Focus Week for Year 13 and Careers Day for Years 10-13. 

•   Keep teachers informed of the university application process and the tasks expected of them.

•   Support students with their online application process and applications and preparation for universities worldwide.

•   Support the clearing and final admissions process for students during the summer.

•   Participate in the events and programming for students’ & parents’ activities or evening events. 

•   Maintain an accurate and up to date record of admission decisions, statistics, and relevant data.

•   Liaise with University Counsellors from across the Dulwich network to improve provision and best practices across the Dulwich group 

•   Contribute fully to the wider life of the school as well as the co-curricular activity programme.


Our School

Dulwich International High School Zhuhai (DHZH) is a selective, English-medium, co-educational four-year high school. Our students are highly motivated and learning focused which provides an outstanding school climate to work in. The majority of our almost 400 students are PRC nationals who will pursue their tertiary studies at excellent universities and colleges outside China. To this end, our students opt out of the Chinese education system at the end of junior middle school to follow a curriculum leading to IGCSEs and A Levels.

DHZH is currently in our eleventh year of operation and  moved to an 800 seat purpose built campus on Hengqin Island in 2021. We opened in September 2010 within the beautiful grounds of the prestigious Yung Wing School in Zhuhai.

Post-holder Qualifications, Experience

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

•   Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject area 

•   Master’s degree an advantage

•   Minimum 5 years’ experience in similar filed

•   Familiarity with and understanding of recent developments in higher education

•   At least two years successful experience in an international school setting 

•   Strong understanding and knowledge of the admission system to colleges, especially in the US and UK but also in Canada, Australia, Korea, Hong Kong and other European and Asian popular with students

•   Understanding of and experience working with non-native English speaking students and parents

•   Complete fluency in English (equivalent to mother tongue), Bi-lingual is preferred. 

•   Organizational and management skills in education and classroom settings

•   Possess a flexible approach to work and a willingness to work beyond school hours when need to meet deadlines

Dulwich International High School Zhuhai (DHZH) is an independent co-educational high school for students aged 14-18. The three to four years’ Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) curriculum covers the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and A-Level (AS and A2).

Rooted in Zhuhai for over 12 years, Dulwich Zhuahi now have over 300 students on roll. Chinese students make up the majority of the student body, although students of other nationalities, also attend the school.

Dulwich Zhuhai has continually achieved the highest standard of academic results, with a track record of preparing students for attending the leading universities worldwide, including Oxford University, Imperial College London, University of Toronto, University of Hong Kong, Australian National University, Berklee College of Music, and many other world-renowned universities.
