The role

Lewisham Virtual School would like to offer the opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team in the role of Outreach Manager

The role involves working to improve the educational outcomes of Looked After Children (LAC) and young people who are not attending school for medical reasons.

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Manage the HOP (Hospital Outreach Programme) team. This service is committed to offering outstanding education provision to young people who are not attending school for physical health and/or mental health reasons.
  • Manage a caseload of young people with a high level of vulnerability. This will include young people with identified Special Educational Needs or who are vulnerable to Child Sexual Exploitation.

Duties will include:

  • Managing a team of education staff who work directly with young people who are not attending school for health reasons
  • Leading on education planning for the team around the child in all CLA cases providing specialist support to a range of professionals.
  • Providing early intervention specialist support for Looked after Children to ensure maximum engagement with education.
  • Managing a budget to deliver maximum value for money for the young people
  • Working with CAMHS to ensure young people have appropriate mental health support to address any barriers to learning
  • Providing direct support to individual Looked After Children to raise educational outcomes.
  • Working with the Headteacher of the Virtual School to develop a comprehensive strategy for raising the attainment of the cohort.
  • Devising and delivering appropriate training to a range of professional staff and organisations
  • Taking a leading role in identifying and commissioning bespoke educational provision for vulnerable learners

What we’re looking for

The successful candidate will be able to work in a variety of settings including school, hospital, home visits to support a range of vulnerable learners to reach their full educational potential.

They will have experience of successfully managing staff and motivating them to achieve outstanding outcomes.

Experience of supporting young people to meet their educational goals and raising educational attainment is essential as is a passionate commitment to working with a challenging cohort who may have a range of additional educational needs. Specific experience of working with Looked after Children is desirable but not essential.

You need to be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven successful experience in the management and improvement of outcomes for a cohort in an education context
  • Evidence of effective partnership working with a range of agencies
  • The passion and energy to motivate, inspire and have high aspiration for learning outcomes of our Looked after Children
  • Empathic understanding of distress associated with mental health difficulties, experienced by both pupils and adults in their lives. Understanding of how these difficulties can impact access to learning and other barriers to learning.
