Job overview

About the role

We seek a dynamic and experienced Singing Teacher. Music has been central to life at Winchester ever since its foundation in 1382 when William of Wykeham made provision for 16 choirboys, Quiristers, who still provide the treble line for the Chapel Choir. The Music Department is now one of the leading departments in the country, offering outstanding opportunities to musical pupils.

Visiting Music Teachers work under the guidance of the Director of Music, assisted by the Head of Piano, Head of Strings, Head of Singing, and Music Administrator, in order to provide the best possible instrumental tuition and to promote musical activity throughout the College.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the majority of the following skills, experience or attributes:

  • An accomplished singer, preferably with either a performer’s diploma or extensive professional performing experience.
  • An experienced teacher of high-achieving students. A degree in music is also desirable.
  • Literacy and IT skills sufficient for writing reports and other administrative tasks.
  • A good team-player, willing to help out where necessary in a busy department.
  • The ability to manage and organise time effectively to meet the demands of the school week.
  • Reliability, honesty, and a professional attitude to all aspects of their work.
  • A genuine concern for the well-being and education (especially musical education) of their pupils.

The school was founded by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, in 1382. Winchester College is a boarding school of 724 pupils. In 2022, the school has accepted day pupils at 16+ years, both boys and girls; and will be accepting girl boarders at 16+ years from 2024. Situated in the heart of Winchester and within easy reach of London, there are few schools in the world which can claim to be as historic, distinguished and beautiful as Winchester College. This unparalleled combination attracts pupils from across the world, making Winchester a truly international and diverse community which celebrates and values everyone’s individuality, talents and potential.
