Strathallan School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, inspirational Peripatetic Visiting Music Tutor (for piano instruction) to join its thriving and well-established Music Department from the start of January 2023.

A Visiting Music Tutor at Strathallan inspires, enthuses, guides, enlivens, and motivates pupils through the study, practice and performance of music. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver the learning and instruction in piano. Additionally, there may be the opportunity to contribute to the co-curricular activities that the department offers.

Applicants should note that whilst the job currently requires 2 days per week, there is no guarantee that this amount of instruction will be required year-on-year. There is the possibility of further hours if sufficient pupils are recruited.


Piano Instruction at Strathallan

Piano instruction is offered from Year 3 (P3) to U6th (S6) and pupils are encouraged to sit Associated Board and Trinity College examinations. Pupils are also presented for GSCE, A Level, Higher and Advanced Higher examinations. The successful applicant will be expected to support their pupils in suitable varied programmes for SQA and Eduqas performing examinations. An expectation to instruct theory of music as well as the other aspects of musicianship will be required during instrumental lessons. You will be required to timetable pupils and report on their development, progress and musical attainment.


Visiting Music Tutor Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver individual music lessons.
  • Under the guidance and leadership of the Director of Music, review, revise or develop musical tutoring, tutoring materials, tutoring programmes, methods of tutoring and assessment arrangements.
  •  Plan, prepare and direct ensemble sessions as required by the Director of Music.
  • Tutor, according to their educational and musical needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and assessment of work to be carried out by the pupils in the School and elsewhere.
  •  Assess, record and report on the development, progress and musical attainment of pupils.
  • Register the attendance of pupils at individual lessons and submit weekly timetables in a timely manner to the Secretary for Music, for publication to the school community.
  • Submit lists of performers/examination candidates timeously for concerts and exams as per the Department standing orders.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.
  • Participate in the arrangements for preparing pupils for public music examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations; recording and reporting such assessments; participating in arrangements for pupils’ presentation for and supervision during such examinations and review of examination results;
  •  Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any group of pupils assigned to him/her.
  • Provide guidance and advice to pupils on music matters; making relevant records and reports and communicating any concerns to the Director of Music.
  • Communicate and consult with the parents of pupils, as required.
  • Communicate and co-operate with departments within the School to manage the attendance of pupils at music lessons.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the School premises and when they are engaged in authorised School activities elsewhere;
  • Participate in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
  • Participate in meetings at the School which relate to the curriculum for the School or the administration or organisation of the School, as directed by the Director of Music.
  • Participate in any arrangements for the appraisal of his/her performance, as required.
  •  Review and continually reflect on his/her methods of tutoring and maintaining his/her professional musical & instrument expertise as well as attending any INSET training developed in order to keep up to date with School or Department matters.
  • Submit monthly timesheets timeously to the Director of Music for submission to the Finance Department.
  • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as are described above.
