Job Title: Wellbeing Counsellor

UWC Dilijan College is looking for an experienced and committed candidate to fill in the position of Wellbeing Counsellor to join in March 2023 or August 2023. 

As part of our commitment to the wellbeing of our students, this role is key to continue to build a pro-active structure giving our students the tools and skills they need to manage their mental health. We want to continue to build positive strategies to develop resilient and strong young people rather than just responding to those in need.

UWC Dilijan – one of the 18 United World Colleges – is an intentionally diverse international boarding school in Armenia. It first opened its doors in August 2014 and now has more around 220 students (16 to 18 years old) from 80 countries, studying for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

Educators at UWC Dilijan have a wide and varied role: beyond the classroom, they also take part in our outdoor education program, CAS program, act as mentors and participate in our residential life programme. Main responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Deputy Head and Head of Residential Life to further develop and deliver our Learning Programme aiming at building resilience, supporting students through their time at UWCD and preparing them for the next steps in their lives.
  • Work with, support and train UWCD staff on issues to do with teenage mental and emotional health, and any particular issues with students in our care at any particular time.
  • Counsel staff and other responsible adults to assist them in understanding, dealing with and/or supporting students.
  • Support and train a small group of students as Peer Listeners and and run regular training once a week as a part of the CAS programme.
  • Offer confidential individual counselling for students. Guide students in the development of skills or strategies for dealing with their problems.
  • Offer small groups (for example students sharing a room) mediation help as needed.
  • Liaise with our residential and medical staff and families to ensure holistic support.
  • Refer students to and liaise with external psychological and psychiatric services as necessary.
  • Maintain confidential records.
  • Liaise with the Admissions team about vetting and interviewing prospective and admitted candidates for enrolment.
  • Maintain knowledge of developments in counselling by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars etc.
  • Maintain professional and transparent relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Report any safeguarding issues directly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead and complete all required safeguarding training as assigned by the college.
  • Be involved in UWC-wide initiatives and an active member of the relevant UWC groups.

Personal and professional specifications:

  • Proven successful experience of working with children and adolescents (other relevant experience outside schools will also be considered). 
  • Previous safeguarding training would be an advantage, otherwise appointed candidates will be expected to undergo initial training before joining UWCD and further training while with us. 
  • Proven experience as a Wellbeing Counsellor in a diverse educational setting.
  • Undergraduate studies in the relevant field; postgraduate studies in education, counseling, or similar areas would be an advantage. 
  • Understanding of and/or readiness to join a residential school. 
  • Open-mindedness and ability to work in an international, intercultural environment.
  • Registration with associations such as the BACP or equivalent.
  • Full professional proficiency in English. Proficiency in other languages as well as intercultural experience is desirable. 
  • Previous involvement or being familiar with either/+both the International Baccalaureate and the Council of International Schools would be an advantage.
