Job overview

RGS Guildford Nanjing will open in September 2020 with entrants to Grade 1 (UK Year 2) in addition to Grades 7 and 10. The senior section of RGS Guildford Nanjing is a boarding school, but Grade 1 will all be day students.

In Grade 1, approximately half of the curriculum time will be for the Chinese National Curriculum, delivered in Chinese by local teachers. In addition, foreign (i.e. First Language English) teachers will deliver additional curriculum material and a programme of activities.

The expectation is that there will be between a two and four form entry in Grade 1, and we are looking to recruit two Year 2 teachers to cover the classes between them in whatever combination plays best to their strengths.

One of these teachers will take the lead and be responsible, initially, for this part of the school in terms of the UK curriculum side and a suitable programme of activities. The other foreign teachers (including the principal) are senior school specialists, so it is important that the Year 2 teachers have the experience and confidence to be self-reliant in the daily operation of this part of the school. There will be a Chinese Head of the primary school. In due course, as it grows, there will of course be additional foreign staff and an appropriate management structure including foreign staff.

This is an exciting opportunity for two teachers to shape the nature of the foreign (UK) curriculum side of the primary school from its conception.

The successful applicants will need to be highly adaptable and self-reliant. They will need to possess the resilience and positivity that is inevitably required when starting something new in a different environment. In all probability, the finer details of how the local and UK curricula will work alongside each other will only be established during the first term of operation. You will need to be a team player, able to work closely with others and to make compromises where necessary. Working closely with Chinese colleagues will clearly be a very important part of the job. In addition, building a close rapport with parents is particularly important where younger year groups are concerned.

UK curriculum experience is essential, and experience of working in a bilingual setting, ideally in China, would be an advantage.

Please see the information booklet for more details about the school in Nanjing, RGS Guildford in the UK and Gemdale Education. There is a generous salary scale (27,000 RMB to 42,800 RMB per month) which is based on experience. The lead teacher will receive an additional allowance. Flights, furnished accommodation, a relocation allowance and international health insurance are provided as standard. Unfortunately, for at least the first two years of operation, we are not able to cover any costs relating to children, including their education at an international school.

If you would like to apply, please fill in our application form and write a cover letter of no more than two sides. Nothing further is required at this stage. These should be sent to nanjingrecruitment@rgsg.co.uk

RGS Guildford, China is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS or ICPC check is required for all successful applicants. We will contact referees when we have your permission and will ask safeguarding-related questions.

RGS Guildford, Nanjing (RGSGNJ) is a partnership between Gemdale Education in China and The Royal Grammar School in Guildford, UK. RGS Guildford is a high achieving independent school with a proud history of more than 500 years. Its pupils have received some 350 Oxbridge offers over the past decade. RGS Guildford also has schools in Qatar, Dubai and Oman with plans to open more. The Gemdale Corporation was ranked by Forbes in 2018 as the top real estate company in China, with assets of some 40 billion USD.

RGSGNJ was opened in August 2020, with approximately 80 students. Now in its fourth year it has enjoyed rapid growth and now has nearly 600 students. It boasts a magnificent campus with superb facilities near the River Yangtze in the Pukou district of Nanjing, one of China's most historic cities. Pukou is a well established district, and the city centre is within easy reach. Nanjing is a green city with beautiful parks and hills. It is a very comfortable city for international staff whilst feeling traditionally Chinese. The fastest trains reach Shanghai in one hour and Beijing in three and a half hours. It is very well connected and has a busy international airport.

As a bilingual international school, the Chinese National Curriculum is taught in Grades 1 to 9 and an International Curriculum in Grades 10 to 12 (The International High School, IHS). The school is currently seeking IB authorisation for the PYP and MYP as a vehicle to delivering the Chinese National Curriculum in a manner than better prepares the students for international education. International teachers are employed throughout the school and make up nearly half of the teaching team in the IHS. The IHS curriculum is based on IGCSEs and A levels. The majority of our leavers go on to universities in the UK, USA and Australia.

The IHS operates a House system and Tutor system. Developing skills and extracurricular activities are important to us and our teaching team contributes to school life beyond classroom teaching. The school is not an "exam factory". The IHS is run by an international principal who was appointed from his role of International Education Director at the UK parent school.
