St. Anthony’s School for Boys is looking for a Year 3 Teacher to join our team in January 2020.

Experience of teaching in Key Stage 2 is essential as is a thorough up-to-date knowledge and experience of the Maths and Science curriculum.   An ability to teach Dance and Drama would be advantageous.

St. Anthony’s is a prestigious and heavily over-subscribed Catholic IAPS preparatory school in the heart of Hampstead.  It is part of the Alpha Plus Group of schools and the salary for the post will be on our Qualified Teachers’ Scale and in the range £32,446 to £41,189.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure teaching objectives are met, momentum and challenge are maintained, and best use is made of teaching time.                 

• Plan lesson to meet pupils’ individual learning needs and plan effectively to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to meet their potential. 

• Secure a high standard of pupil behaviour in the classroom and use a range of appropriate strategies for teaching and classroom management.          

• Identify pupils who have special educational needs and plan effectively to meet the needs of those pupils.

• Design and adapt long, medium and short term plans for all schemes of work taught.     

• Mark and monitor pupils’ class and homework providing constructive oral and written feedback, setting targets for future progress.

• Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues including, where applicable, associate staff.

• Direct and line-manage Teaching Assistants and other relevant support staff effectively.

• As directed by the SENCO and HoDs, support Year 7 and 8 pupils in Maths and Science.   Provide both enrichment and learning support classes in Maths, Biology and Chemistry.  Support the Year 8 pupils as they prepare for the Common Entrance Exams.

• Teach drama and dance to both Year 3 classes.  Run a dance hobby that is accessible to students with learning needs, including autism   and organise the annual dance show for parents.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

• A university degree and teaching qualification.

• An understanding of and sympathy with the school’s strong Catholic ethos.

• Experience of teaching in Key Stage 2 is essential and Key Stage 3 is desirable.

• A thorough up-to-date knowledge and experience of the Maths and Science curriculum.

• Experience in managing student social and emotional wellbeing.

• Experience working/liaising with outside agencies, e.g. occupational therapists, speech-therapists – knowing when to refer and then and applying their recommendations.

• Knowledge of baseline testing and interpreting data (including standardised data) to inform your teaching.

• Experience of teaching dance and drama.

• Energy, tenacity and commitment to the post and the ability to work in harmony with colleagues.

• A genuine interest in and enthusiasm for working with children; experience teaching boys of prep school age, from Year 3 to Year 8.

• Excellent IT and organisational skills and the ability to use IT as a resource for teaching and administration, including the use of Firefly to set homework and communicate key information to parents.

About St Anthony's School for Boys

Brief History

St Anthony’s is a Catholic Preparatory School (IAPS) for boys aged 4 – 13. It is Roman Catholic but welcomes boys of other faiths. There are currently over 310 pupils on roll and the school is looking to increase this number to 330 over the next few years. The majority of boys transfer to leading Independent schools.

St. Anthony’s school was founded by Richard Patton during the Victorian period in Eastbourne. It moved to its Hampstead location in 1952 and has been managed by the Alpha Plus Group since 2009.

Ethos and values

The school operates a two-form entry with approximately 20 boys in each class from Reception up to and including Year 6. About half the year group leave St Anthony’s to join Year 7 senior schools including UCS, City of London and Highgate. The remaining pupils stay on to prepare for Common Entrance at the end of Year 8 before proceeding to leading boarding and day schools such as Harrow, Eton, St Paul’s and Westminster.

The school is not super-selective and promotes a caring, nurturing environment promoting the holistic education of each child. We speak of St Anthony’s as a greenhouse rather than a hothouse! Pastoral and academic expectations are high amongst parents and staff. The school adds significant value to pupils’ learning and there is great emphasis on regular communication between boys, staff and pupils.

St Anthony’s achieved ‘Excellent’ in all categories of the ISI full-school inspection in November 2019 - the school is now pursuing an ambitious development plan incorporating digital literacy with outstanding academic, pastoral and co-curricular provision.
