Year 6 Class Teacher - April 2018
Required for April 2018, a qualified, enthusiastic and experienced Key Stage 2 teacher (part time) to teach Year 6 and to oversee the organisation and development of the Year 6 curriculum. This is a rare opportunity for a primary specialist to join the friendly, supportive and committed academic staff team in this highly regarded central London performing arts school. The school is co-educational, catering for 250 students from 10-16 who receive a high standard of academic education to GCSE level alongside their vocational training. Academic education and qualifications are highly valued by the school, and the students display a very positive attitude to their academic studies.
The school is two form entry from year 7 onwards, but there is just one small class in year 6 (usually between 15 & 20 students). Year 6 are taught by their class teacher for all their academic studies apart from Art and ICT which are taught by secondary subject specialists.
The post is part time, as are all academic teaching posts. The position requires 3 full days teaching on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no flexibility in this respect as all academic lessons take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are devoted entirely to vocational training.
The academic staff work as a mutually supportive team with everyone taking responsibility for their own classes, and sharing responsibility for their subject area with other teachers of the same subject. There are no heads of department and no middle management posts. The level of knowledge and responsibility required to operate within this very successful structure means that the post is not suitable for an NQT. The year 6 teacher is the only primary specialist on the staff so must be knowledgeable about, and confident in delivering, the year 6 curriculum without other primary trained staff to liaise with.
