The GTC has accepted there is an “accelerating decline” in the quality of applicants to the one-year postgraduate secondary teaching courses, especially in shortage subjects.

The council does not believe there is a need to increase the maximum intake to teacher training. Institutions that were allowed to increase their intake would only be training students to teach outside Scotland or to use their skills in a related profession.

“Teacher unemployment in Scotland is an embarrassment at present and to increase this still further would seem to be extremely unwise,” the GTC states.
