The EIS’s vice-president laid down another marker for the Scottish parliament when he called on MSPs to “reassert the function” of the Scottish Joint Negotiating Committee, which determines teachers’ pay and conditions.

John Patton, head of Craigbank primary in Alloa, said there had to be “a paradigm shift” in industrial relations in the public sector. “The SJNC has served education well and it would be an unpardonable act of folly, to coin a phrase, for a new government to attempt any dilution or removal of this right.”
