All that jazz

The first year of the new Higher and Advanced Higher papers, with a different layout and slightly different styles of questions, was awaited with some trepidation by pupils and teachers alike.

But, on the day, the exams were greeted with some relief, according to Anne McGowan, principal teacher of performing arts at Our Lady’s High in Motherwell.

“It was much fairer than the specimen paper and national assessment bank items that had been sent out. Some pupils had been panicking,” she said.

In the event, the “column” or comparison questions in Higher and Advanced Higher would probably have been the most challenging.

The candidates listen to two extracts of music and from a list of musical concepts have to identify which matches which piece and which ones are similar. Ms McGowan was pleased with the range of music chosen - from Renaissance to jazz.
